Running SAH 7.00 over a network. Some work units run fine in about 4-5 hours. Others do the funky thing where the percent completed hits >99% then resets to 0%, the time to completion starts counting upward again and the work unit appears to process from scratch, total time for completion of the work unit ends up being near 16 hours. I have seen enough mention of this tendency that I am not going to worry about it if BOINC isn't worried about it, I'll just let it run. But...

When the work unit is about to process the second time and before the clock starts upward again, Windows 7 says that BOINC 'has encountered a problem and must close', which is as helpful as say, a Microsoft help message...or not at all. Is there any tweak to keep BOINC from crashing when it goes to reprocess these funkier work units? As you can see from the SAH log, the client downloaded a lot of work units, which will mean a lot of crashes of BOINC assuming that half of these are of the funky format (which appears to be roughly the case). Look especially at 5:40PM on 10/2, as that work unit rerun is one that crashed BOINC as described.

Since I can monitor BOINC over the network anyway, I can run the commandline version in Windows if needed.

Here is my client messages log. The computer in question is the one called user-PC

I see the first problem. You say you are running Windows 7 but it appears you are running a fairly old linux boinc version.
nixtower1 --- 10/1/2013 8:35:36 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.45 for i686-pc-linux-gnu

you'll need to update your BOINC app to the current version and make sure its for the Windows 64bit

The Log he posted is mixed from 2 Computers (named 'nixtower1' and 'user-PC') which is really confusing.

Question: is Data directory: T:\ real partition or subst/mapped drive?

user-PC --- 10/2/2013 5:41:52 AM max disk usage: 0.00GB

Try to increase both 'max memory usage when active' and 'max disk usage' (3 parameters control 'max disk usage', most restrictive is used by BOINC)

the client downloaded a lot of work units, which will mean a lot of crashes of BOINC assuming that half of these are of the funky format (which appears to be roughly the case).

There is no 'funky format' - all the tasks are the same.

Thanks for responding.

1) I bumped my active RAM up per your suggestion. Will have to wait for the current (funky) WU to finish and a couple of others to run to see if this impacts crashes.

2) You asked in another reply: Question: is Data directory: T:\ real partition or subst/mapped drive? It is a mapped (Samba) share. I do have the option of using an actual dedicated partition if stability hinges on it. It will still be over Samba, however.

3) On a related subject, figured out the Windows 7 trust issue...it was not the BOINC application, it was the location of the BOINC application. That is resolved now. Would that have been responsible for the application crashes?

4) Sorry about the log above. The specs for adding a questions said 'include 'message log', not filter 'em, so I didn't filter.

5) Your Hillary signature icon says I'm using Windstream, Firefox and Windows. Two for three. Apparently my nix browser ID string munge is working...there's hope for privacy yet!

One other thing occurs to me: Looking at the work units in queue, some of them read as wanting an estimated 28 hours to complete. That is way beyond what I have usually seen in the past: a SETI WU takes 4-5 hours (I'm ignoring Astropulse for this average).

Again, I assumed that this was the new calculations happening to the WUs, and if the WU is crunched twice, if the total comes to 24 hours (what the current WU appears will end up at) that is within the estimate provided. So that's not a problem if the application doesn't crash.

Did you also fix 'max disk usage: 0.00GB'? (this will be 'max disk usage' on the mentioned "mapped (Samba) share")
What are the 3 values:
Disk: use at most XX GB
Disk: leave free at least 0.YY GB
Disk: use at most ZZ% of total

... and what is the total GB size of T:\ and how much is the free space (as seen in any file manager e.g. Windows Explorer, Total Commander)

2) You asked in another reply: Question: is Data directory: T:\ real partition or subst/mapped drive? It is a mapped (Samba) share. I do have the option of using an actual dedicated partition if stability hinges on it. It will still be over Samba, however.

I don't know what is 'Samba' but BOINC have to have full read/write/execute access to files there (T:\) at all times.

3) On a related subject, figured out the Windows 7 trust issue...it was not the BOINC application, it was the location of the BOINC application. That is resolved now. Would that have been responsible for the application crashes?

If that 'location' have restricted rights (for read/execute) or the files are locked unexpectedly (e.g. by antivirus) - yes, any program will be confused (crash) if its .exe or .dll files 'vanish' during execution.

5) Your Hillary signature icon says I'm using Windstream, Firefox and Windows. Two for three. Apparently my nix browser ID string munge is working...there's hope for privacy yet!

You know that only you see this info (I see my info, picture is dynamic to show the 'calling' machine info)

When I started this post, the total disk space available was 50GB. Since we started conversing, I moved the Windows client and work units into a dedicated partition and fiddled the server. It's back online now in its own partition. I left the disk usage at 0.00 because, as I understand it, that means that BOINC can use the entire partition. However I willl set it manually to the new partition free space.

> I don't know what is 'Samba' but BOINC have to have full read/write/execute access to files there (T:\) at all times.

It has full access. I will watch it in this new partition and see if BOINC stabilizes.

(this is 'max disk usage', not just 'disk usage')

No, 0.00 means that BOINC have no permission from you to use any more space than it uses now!
Even if the free space is 40 GB BOINC will not use any of it because you give no permission.
So BOINC can't create new files or grow the existing files.

My 3 values are set so BOINC shows:
05-10-2013 04:21 max disk usage: 1.50GB

Okay, I allocated the same amount of disk space in the BOINC client as you did, probably for the same reason as you. I allocated 1.5 GB and change on the partition running the Windows version on the network.

I did not ask it to, but the BOINC server has queued 70 work units for the Windows PC and that comes to only 26MB of that partition used. That leaves about 1.5 GB free which should be plenty.

Now I will monitor it.

The max that one computer can get from SETI is 100 tasks for CPU + 100 tasks for GPU
If they all are AstroPulse tasks (8 MB each) this is max 200 * 8 = 1600 MB for the WU files.
I do AstroPulse only on the GPU (max 100 AstroPulse tasks)

UPDATE: Gawd, I hate Windows! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. All better now...

BOINC in Windows was continuing to crash once per day on average for the past week. Various tweaks in power settings, display settings, server, BOINC settings, etc., did not help.

One message from BOINC suggested that my video driver should be updated. Microsoft (via Device Manager) assured me that the driver was up to date already. Not trusting Microsoft with a used bus ticket, I went to AMD, which, after spewing an entire suite of essentially useless video utilities onto my hard drive, updated to the video driver which Microsoft said did not exist.

After this, it tentatively appears that when a single work unit is running alone in Windows, the Windows 7 version of BOINC appears to not crash (I have now been running for 24 hours without a BOINC crash in Windows 7, which merits this update). I have managed to finish four SETI@Home work units and go to the next work unit without a crash over the past day. None of them were Astropulse, but even then if necessary I can disable GPU and run a single work unit at a time and I suspect that that will stabilize things (but I cannot definitively confirm that until more Astropulse units are sent, as I have none in queue at this time).

I am not still entirely convinced of the quality control of the new BOINC version as the work queue is described as variously 45 days, 58 days and 152 days of work in queue when I did specify in the settings to send no more than 15 days (this was from that time about a year ago when the BOINC servers were going offline relatively regularly and I wanted to have more than a week of work in queue).

Anyway, good times...

UPDATE: Gawd, I hate Windows! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. All better now...

Seeing how you're only using Windows XP, you're going to hate it much more next year when most hardware update sites will decide whether or not support for it falls away. At least Microsoft themselves stop supporting it.

BOINC in Windows was continuing to crash once per day on average for the past week. Various tweaks in power settings, display settings, server, BOINC settings, etc., did not help.

Do tell what a BOINC crash looks like.
Any corroborating crash logs from either stderrdae.txt, stderrgui.txt or Windows Event Log?

Microsoft (via Device Manager) assured me that the driver was up to date already.

Microsoft strips key elements from their WHQL drivers, making them WHQL capable and stable. These key elements include OpenGL, OpenCL and CUDA support for Nvidia GPUs and OpenGL and OpenCL support for AMD and Intel GPUs. It's stressed at all the FAQs and Help on BOINC & GPU computing that you should get the drivers from the GPU manufacturer, not those from Windows. You did look for help on this, didn't you? It is readily available.

Not trusting Microsoft with a used bus ticket, I went to AMD, which, after spewing an entire suite of essentially useless video utilities onto my hard drive, updated to the video driver which Microsoft said did not exist.

Biggest problem with that is that the driver that you use does not contain the OpenCL element under Windows XP. Then again, the ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200/4200 (RV610) series do not do OpenCL, so they fall back to CAL capability. Which it seems to do on your system, but then at 274,823.81 seconds run time one wonders if it is worth it in electrical costs to run these tasks on your GPU.

...the Windows 7 version of BOINC

If by this you mean BOINC 7.0, or 7.2, then do know that the BOINC numbering has nothing to do with the Windows numbering. It has nothing to do with how Seti numbers its applications either.

BOINC 7.0 and 7.2 run fine on any Windows version, from 2000 to the latest 8.2 preview. Similarly, most versions of BOINC from 4.43 to 7.2.21 runs fine on any of these Windows versions.

(I have now been running for 24 hours without a BOINC crash in Windows 7, which merits this update)

According to your list of computers, you do not have any system running Windows 7. Is it a computer on another account? Or did you install BOINC under Windows compatibility mode?

I am not still entirely convinced of the quality control of the new BOINC version as the work queue is described as variously 45 days, 58 days and 152 days of work in queue when I did specify in the settings to send no more than 15 days.

As you've already been told, the max that one computer can get from SETI is 100 tasks for CPU + 100 tasks for GPU. This is set by the server. It doesn't matter how much you set for BOINC to download, at this project it won't do so. Has nothing to do with quality control of anything.

But, having said that, we are always on the look-out for new testers of BOINC. It's really simple, just follow http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/AlphaInstructions. That way you can always run the bleeding edge early bird BOINC versions, have them crash on your system, have them crash and burn all the work on your system, and report all those fun bits to the developers. You get to be able to almost touch the gods behind the code.

It'll also give you a chance to learn all about the depths and shallows of this fine software. Of course, not doing so means you can't really complain about it anymore either, as then you're just shoving responsibility into someone else's back yard. Win win! :-)

I am running Windows 7 Professional, not XP. However, one of the many tweaks I have attempted over the past week or so to prevent BOINC from crashing is to run BOINC in compatibility mode. So, yes, the log will read Windows XP at this point.

So anyway, after I posted my last update, BOINC crashed again. So now I am trying a more creative resolution...

The problem as I see it is twofold. One: There is a genuine reason that BOINC crashes. However, since I am running out of tweaks to try, I am coming to accept that I cannot address that problem. Two: Windows 7 pops up a 'drama box' forcing a human to acknowledge that BOINC has crashed and must close. In other words, in actuality BOINC stops processing, but really only HANGS until a human acknowledges the Windows drama box, THEN it crashes.

It occurred to me that if I can prevent the drama box, and BOINC just silently crashes all of the way, I can use Task Scheduler to attempt to restart it every 60 minutes or so. So if BOINC is runnning, nothing happens. If BOINC has crashed completely instead of hanging then crashing, Task Scheduler should restart it in some time span of less than 60 minutes.

To the end of trying to prevent the Windows drama box when BOINC crashes, I am now tweaking Windows Error Reporting settings in the Group Policy Editor.

I'll check back in.

what messages are you getting on your Win7 admin tools/ event viewer/ application log and system log. Since we've pretty much hit everything else perhaps these logs may add a little insight into what is going wrong.

Please test with BOINC 7.2.21
32bit version
64bit version

I ask this, as there has code been added to prevent the client from crashing. I had the same problem for a long time, usually after coming back from hibernation. So the developers added some sterner code that should prevent the client from crashing. They're also still busy with this code.

When the Windows 7 crash box shows, it'll show an option to show more information. If you manage to crash 7.2.21, click the option to show more information. In the message box it'll show what temporary files it wants to send to Microsoft.

DO NOT CLOSE THIS BOX YET. First go to the path of each of the files showing in the box (you can enlarge the box, so you can see the full file path and file names. Normally that'll be something like these:
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp\WERE99C.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp\WERDCF.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp\WERFE2.tmp.mdmp

Copy these three files to elsewhere safe, because as soon as you tell Windows to close that message box, these files will disappear.

Next go to BOINC Trac and register yourself.
Then open http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/1195 and add your story, plus the files. It would be nice if you manage to ZIP, RAR or 7ZIP them before that.

There's no need to add to it with 7.0.64, as the developers already know about that one. Only when you manage to crash 7.2.21 in a similar manner.
And do install BOINC just as normal, not in compatibility mode. That never adds stability to BOINC.

UPDATE:

I wanted a couple of work units to complete fully before another update, so here we go...

People have asked about the Event Log. The Event Log, at the last crash seemed to be possibly complaining about the network again, so I increased the time for network communications to 90 seconds (from the default of 60 seconds) in the BOINC client.

People have also suggested a new beta version of the BOINC client. Maybe for the future, right now I appear to have BOINC reasonably stabilized with this version.

So now I am running BOINC over the Samba network with the following tweaks (some of which may not be necessary)...

- BOINC installed in a dedicated drive partition with full permission in Samba for BOINC to read and write to that partition,
- BOINC at a 90 second delay between network communication,
- BOINC able to use up to 100% of resources on the client machine when idle,
- Size of drive specified in BOINC (slightly less than the actual dedicated partition allocated for BOINC),
- BOINC in compatibility mode (Windows XP, SP3),
- BOINC with GPU disabled (it appears that the AMD/ATI chipset is not supposed to be compatible with SETI@Home),
- Turned off Windows Clock synchronization (saw it as a help suggestion, don't care about it anyway),
- Use Windows 7 Task Scheduler to boot BOINC. It starts BOINC at boot up, and checks once per hour that BOINC is still running...restarts BOINC if not running, otherwise does nothing,
- Adjusted Windows Error Reporting to close a crashed application instead of producing a 'panic box' and HANGING the application rather than letting it crash completely. (This permits Task Scheduler to see that BOINC is NOT running IF or WHEN it crashes, and therefore to see if BOINC needs restarting hourly...I may adjut this check down to 20 minutes or so.)

Now, BOINC still crashed after about 48 hours, but, here's the really good news...

1) When BOINC crashed, I did NOT restart it manually NOR did I even look for a Windows 'panic box' on the Windows 7 machine. In fact, I walked away from the computer and waited an hour. It appears that my Windows Error Reporting tweak in conjunction with my Task Scheduler check was sufficient to restart BOINC on its own.

2) More importantly, the task which was running when BOINC crashed resumed when BOINC restarted, and eventually completed with no 'file 0' errors. It just restarted and completed normally.

I am not eBay or Amazon. I do not require that BOINC run 24/7 uninterrupted. If BOINC crashes on average once every 2 days and is offline for less than 1 hour at that time, I can live with that (and maybe even tweak the Task Scheduler check BOINC status at a smaller time than one hour).

... so I increased the time for network communications to 90 seconds (from the default of 60 seconds) in the BOINC client.

Which exact setting do you mean?

People have also suggested a new beta version of the BOINC client.

- BOINC installed in a dedicated drive partition with full permission in Samba for BOINC to read and write to that partition,

Does this also imply 'execute'? (as the apps are there - in the BOINC Data directory)
Is this 'drive partition' always mounted? (or Samba/network can unmount/mount it at random time)
(What is the reason that you can't use 1-2 GB of real HDD space?)

- BOINC in compatibility mode (Windows XP, SP3),

I don't understand why you think you need this (BOINC have to run fine in 'native' Windows 7)

If you mean your older AMD ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200/4200 (RV610) (256MB) - yes, not much it can do for SETI computing (only AstroPulse in CAL/hybrid (CPU 80% + GPU 20% of 'work') mode).

But many people (including me - ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6570) are using (newer) AMD/ATI GPUs for SETI

Task Checkpoint to Disk at most every x seconds.

All reading and writing is done to a network disk. No reading and writing is done to/from the disk in the Windows machine. So this setting should equate with network activity for this setup.

It was Ageless. I'm still not sure I'm inclined to switch versions at this point, when I've just stabilized it...especially to beta. Maybe later.

The BOINC client can also execute from the Samba drive for the BOINC partition, and the Samba server is always online for file and printer sharing with the same Windows 7 machine. The drive partition does not unmount (unless Samba is having issues I am unaware of).

I could use the local hard drive on the Windows machine. I don't do it for three reasons: even though it is not a lot of data, it would mean continual activity on that hard drive; I have an extra hard drive in the Linux box for just that sort of experimental task; there is no reason it should not be doable, as I gather that many people run BOINC over a network.

At the time I was trying anything and everything to get BOINC to stabilize. Windows XP works with less resources, so why not try it? Compatibility Mode will be one of those things that I phase out and monitor.

According to this page http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing I should not expect to be able to do GPU processing with SAH on an ATI chipset. Yes, it only appears to process one work unit at a time now in Windows instead of switching off between two, but since I saw a couple of 'file 0' errors (could not close the results file) very early in this setup, and I am not sure what caused it, better to leave GPU out of the equation for the time being.
