I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years

Hard to support SETI for more than 15 years when they are just coming up on their 15th Ani in April 2014.

Not if you are a member of the Planetary Society.

He said SETI, not Seti@Home. I, too, am a Charter Member of the Planetary Society. Ooooh, I need to renew my membership. Thanks for the nudge. (8{)

While he did say SETI and not SETI@home, he also complained about seeing issues more than once, suggesting to at least me, that he believed he was part of SETI@home longer than 15 years. If the two thoughts were unrelated, a separation of the two would have been nice.

Otherwise I fail to see the reason in pointing out supporting SETI for 15+ years when complaining about server issues with SETI@home.

Well, with a Join Date of October 99, he's been with the project longer than either of us, so I'm not gonna be fussy about his math.

But after rereading his comments, I think he forgets that while the folks at Berkeley ARE smarter than the average Golden Bears, they have been constrained from the beginning by funding and available space. No matter how good an engineer you are, the installation has to fit within the available facilities and resources. Seti@Home, even housed at UC Berkeley, ain't Google or Amazon.

What all of you are forgetting is the date you quote is the date that the first work unit went out. Seti@Home existed for some considerable time before that. The Planetary Society had a fund raising drive for the seed money to get the project off the ground, pay for the telescope time so there was a first work unit to send out, pay the programmers to write the code, build the radio receiver, and the like. It funded the projects that came before Seti@Home, many of which are still ongoing at Berkeley. http://seti.berkeley.edu/ Those of us who are charter members should be displaying a SETI join date in 1980/1, a decade before Seti@home sent out the first work unit.

If you care about SETI or space and have a few $ to spare I suggest you join The Planetary Society, but make your donation here first.

But certainly you can't complain about server problems before the servers are considered "live"...? I still don't understand the reason in pointing out supporting SETI for 15+ years on the SETI@home site.

FWIW, my BOINC just got a new AstroPulse task for the first time since the outage. :-) Not that it had meny before that either, I just started two weeks ago and am now also running Rosetta@home. Still awaiting validation for two AP's that I finished before the outage.

.. Lights and temp are just as important as the servers unless it is only designed to handle power while the servers shut down automatically.

That is pretty much the case, only the servers don't shut down automatically. They are shut down manually. In the case of Seti@Home, that's a major necessity because the interplay of the various servers, tables, and scripts is so complex.

Not that I see any point in responding to you, since I doubt you'll come back to see if there are any answers to your whine.

I see it took until the 15th to clear the power outage from the IST list.

Language games aside, it would be interesting to know where the magic smoke was leaking from.

As for Datacenter functionality in the face of a power outage? I strongly suspect that that datacenter is built on spec to be able to operate for <x> time in an outage. Since <x> is a real world measurement bounded by cost, <x> is going to be a modest number. Air conditioning systems for a facility are going to eat up a LOT of power generating capacity. At <y> % of remaining capacity on the system, the AC is probably powered down, and then after a few minutes, hardware is brought down. Cascading, controlled failure.

There may well be another consideration that happened. Generator for the datacenter may well have been adequate, if just the datacenter went down. However with the large area affected, decisions may have been made that the power from the generator was more useful elsewhere. It took the campus over two weeks to place all power back on the utility mains!

An abundance of thieves?

Explosion at UC Berkeley: Campus Evacuated, Minor Injuries, Fire, 20 Trapped in Elevators

A loud electrical explosion in the center of the UC Berkeley campus Monday night – apparently caused by a copper theft – ignited a fire, left four people with injuries, forced a campus evacuation and left about 20 people stuck in elevators.

I know very well the data center, as was one of the Project managers responsible for moving systems and servers around campus to the new installations end of 2005 and 2006 I believe - well they were new then, and the best data center I have seen.

How ever, thieves of copper wire in the states? Thought that was only here in São Paulo (Brasil) that idiots did those things, and even with lines with current flowing. So every now and then, you read about a few chared bodies found in manhole access in the city, where they thnk they can just cut a few 15kv lines out (connected) and they will live to enjoy the spoils.

Yea,the idiots around the world are all the same. Shame to hear about this in the Berkley área where there are suppose to be above average of educated population, and would consider thieves with a little over a above knowdlege of danger.
