Hallo. As you might have guessed from the title, I have Aspergers Syndrome. Aspergers Syndrome is a high functioning level of autism. People with Aspergers ussualy have a normal or high IQ, but struggle to socially communicate with other people. We also have specific interests that might seem strange to other people. My specific interest is Halloween.

If you are an Aspergian, what is your specific interest? If you're not an Aspergian, feel free to post anyway!

I had to look up what Asperger syndrome is.

At school i had limited empathy with my peers, but since most of them couldn't be trusted to sit the right way on a toilet seat i think that was more to do with them than me.

Welcome.

I was going to make a joke about a certain vegetable, but then I realized you were talking to and about me.

I too, am a high IQ fellow with a rather troubling level of social functioning.
I cannot really deal well with folks on a face to face basis.
I have always been accused of staring at people, when all I am really doing with my eyes is asking them to tell me who they are.
And they interpret that as spooky.
My specific interests, if you could not guess, are computers and Seti.
And..LOL...cats.

How are you on tests?
I mean, what I really excell at is multiple choice.
Given a range of possible answers, I can increase my odds of passing the test.
IE, my intellect and reasoning can usually delete one or two of the answers, thus leaving me a better chance of being correct.
If you give me an open question, I can wander about in the field for years, and never get to the gate.

Nice to have somebody that associates with my affliction.
Nobody else, for years, has nailed it as close as you have.

Meow,
Mark

So, you're saying you have Aspergers, right?

About tests, I'm pretty good with problem solving. My problem with tests is speed, since I'm a pretty thorough thinker.

My son the Cookietaster has/had a friend with your illness. Lasted until he broke into a local school and I had to ban him from my house. Sadly I had to make the call to the cops.
For a long time, he was a good kid. If I had known more about his home situation, I may have requested guardianship.
There is a lot more background, but he is not a Setizen, so answers will have to be by PM.
Glad you are doing well Obegone.

It was mentioned that before I was born My Grandparents were afraid I could be autistic, since My Mother was 38(and My Dad was 42, which is important according to the facts here), mind you this was in 1960, My Dad did hold Me back a grade in school cause He thought I wasn't doing good enough, those aren't His exact words though, since its been a number of years, I have seen and been treated by a psychiatrist, but not for Autism, just depression, the pills had an effect, but not for depression, they made Me 'less sharp and on the ball' as the saying goes, that never came up as I didn't think of that.

Edit: There is this NY Time story Here.

Previous research found that the risk of autism grew with the age of the father. The new study suggested that when the father was over 40 and the mother under 30, the increased risk was especially pronounced — 59 percent greater than for younger men.

By contrast, for women 30 and older, the risk of autism rose 13 percent when the father was over 40.

Every five-year increase in a mother’s age raised her risk of having a child with autism by 18 percent; a 40-year-old woman’s risk was 50 percent greater than that of a woman who became a mother in her late 20s, and 77 percent higher than that of a woman under 25.

But while the number of California women giving birth in their 40s rose sharply in the 1990s, the researchers said that could not account for the sevenfold rise in autism during the decade.

Hmm, that's too bad. Hope he's doing better.

Also, Asperger's to me isn't much of an illness than it is a condition of mind. That's just my opinion about it.

I don't have Asperger's; however, I do have a mood disorder that classifies me as disabled. I do whole heartedly agree with you, that it is a condition of mind. In addition, we must be medicine compliant. Once on the right cocktail for optimum performance, we must adhere to taking our medicine(s) daily. I bring this up; because I know a woman who's son has Asperger's, and he refuses to stay on his meds. According to her, this just makes things worse for him.

Good to have you here, Obegone. Welcome to SETI at Home. :-)

Ladies/Gents --

Without going into specifics, I do have close familiarity with mental "illness" (I don't particularily care for that term, but,
there it is.).

Will offer a suggestion to anyone who might have a need for
support services -- check out NAMI (National Alliance on Mental
Illness). I have been a member for a number of years, and they
offer many valuable services.

Probably, most of you, my fellow Setizens, know of NAMI, but to
make sure all bases are covered, will offer its name, here.

Good luck, to one and all.

I am one of those boring "neuro-typicals", but as a hospital based speech and language pathologist I have worked for nearly 25 years with children who have special learning needs. Children who have high functioning forms of autism spectrum disorders have been some of my favorite patients over the years. Children with autism spectrum disorders typically make up about a third of my active caseload. I only have one patient right now with Aspergers Syndrome, but I can assure you that he is an absolute delight!

It has been my clinical impression that some very cherished members of this happy crunching community are most probably adults with autism spectrum disorders. (Sorry Mark, your posts, at least, give me no indication that you have an ASD. Of course we have not met in person...)

Anyway, seti@home is a VERY welcoming place where friends can interact, collaborate and simply enjoy the company of others who share their passions and interests.

And as for Halloween - hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I took today off of work to begin the decorating process. It is my absolute favorite time of the the year.

Obegone, please set up a Halloween thread. Many of us would happily participate there.

Halloween thread, y' say? Sounds like a plan to me.

As for deco, I'm preparing my props right now (I do paper mache props) and I'm nearing completion of my setup. However, I usually start set-up around the week of Halloween, thanks to Utah's wack-a-doodle weather (it gets rather windy in October, but I might get lucky this year).
