Now that all the silly discussions about I.D, evolution and God are locked and hopefully behind us there doesn't seem to be any new quality topics of discussion starting up in the Seti or non seti science boards. Recently I watched the original James Burke series "Connections" that originally aired over 30 years ago. In the final episode he talked about science driving the direction that society as a whole is taking and how poorly informed the general public is about the science involved. As I recall he concluded that we have four choices about our future. (One) try to go back to the way we were before the beginning of the 20th century. (Two) try to only use the science that doesn't adversely impact the environment and abandon things like nuclear power. (Three) try to use science to solve all our problems but abandon science that does no good for improving public welfare. and (Four) continue as were are.

Some people favor the first choice but they ignore that fact that the population of the world has exceeded any means to feed everyone using pre-industrial technology. The flaw with the second choice is that many times the benefits to be derived from the various lines of research are not known and can't be predicted at the outset which is also why three won't work. So we are left with the direction that science and technology have taken us since the 1980s with little or no limitations imposed by the uninformed masses.

I think I'll rent and watch some of Mr. Burke's more recent observations of where he thinks the world is heading.

World War Z is The Direction The World is heading. Excellent Movie. More than a Zombie Apocalypse.
