Interesting comments....

Oh gosh, I promised myself that I wouldn't start so many threads this year.

Me, I would love to see some more action in the Science Corner. Personally I don't mind the Politics forum or the posts in it as I'm avoiding that area most of the time:)
After all, the crunching for the project is what really matters (and the funding of course!!)

Fair comment and accepted.

Agreed, yes it should be. But I still think we are being "used" by others with different agendas.

Sorry Chris, I did not mean to sound confrontational, I just find this board....

In that case, the same could be said for the Cafe....

...c'mon, countless pictures showing numbers from adults?

Pic's of trains?

The politics threads are often funnier & more interesting than the cafe.

As for others and their agendas, why do you reply to them knowing that fact?

Ignore them! The problem is that we all have our own thoughts and sometimes reading a post can get one's back up. We're all guilty of that.

I've said it before & I'll say it again...

"If we're all the same, what a damned boring world this would be".

Personally I think I actually prefer the political board, even if sometimes you think the views of others are illogical.

I've pulled away from NC because it is just a rehash of all the questions and answers given a few months ago, and they were only a rehash of the posts a year ago. The loss of bonus credits when running optimised apps recently was just a repeat of the loss when enhanced was introduced.

In the cafe, I find has too many I would rather not have to deal with because of their issues. I lost three very good friends because of the alcohol problems of another person, and I have to deal daily with an autistic son. I don't go to places where I meet exactly the same problems.

I don't mind discussing religion even though I am an atheist, because of my background I probably know more about the three main religions than most of the so called religious people who post her.

And politically I find it amusing, as most people who know me in the UK, would regard me as a right wing conservative, but I am sure our cousins over the pond, on this board, see me as a left wing liberal.

P.S. Talking politics I am sorry to see Tony (Wedgie) Benn was taken into hospital yesterday. Had a few good discussions with him when he was Minster for Energy.

Another fair question, (stop doing that) not sure I have that good an answer....

Sorry :)

This is supposed to be a basically a scientific project, but in its endeavors to be all things to all people, it seems to me to have lost its way a little bit. We are not a Clinic, we are not a Day Centre, we are not a haven for activists, we are not a home for societies drop outs. We are part of the University of California, a well respected institution, taking part in a scientific experiment, why do we have all these hangers on?

The same reason why you always get one heckler at a meeting/lecture/debate. They love the sound of their voice.

After all, the crunching for the project is what really matters

How many people are honestly here for that?

Whether or not it's one wu or 1,000,000 they have to crunch to be able to post.

Now if the rule was 100 or 1000 to crunch that would be a different kettle of fish.

Yes it is, and that only goes to highlight the very point that I have been making. That the Seti Politics forum has been infiltrated and usurped by a certain number of people that have no real business being there. If say, you had to have a green star and a minimum 500 or 1000 RAC to post in politics, how many would remain???

I Hope My 998 is Sending Your Blood Pressure Up Up Up. If a 10 RAC would Make Your Head Explode, I would Lower it Further. Kidding? hehehe

I think a donation of $1.00 US per post in any forum could really get this project off the ground.
Come One, come All, no RAC necessary.

Green stars not needed then?

That's something worth thinking about...if you want to put your pennyworth in, or
like some of us, your pounds worth then you will have first needed to have gained
a green star before you can post to this thread.

All I can add here are a few comments about myself.

I obviously crunch the heck out of Seti data, and everybody knows my love of the project.
I have always carried a green star. And I have raised my dismay at times that some of the other high RAC crunchers, who could obviously afford to do so, do not. (And I am always reminded when I bring up that point that there are some who may be contributing, but for some reason don't wish anybody to know about it, something I have never understood the reason for.) As well as some of the loudest complainers with no star.

And I do not use the political forum to push any agenda, per se.
I have some very strong opinions about certain subjects, and express them freely at times, occasionally to the chagrin and dismay of certain others.

Sometimes, I just post my opinion to get the feedback and opinions of others.

I think the political forum has it's place and purpose. Those who don't like it can spend their time in the numerous other forums on Seti where they may feel safer.

Seti@Home is supposed to be a scientific project, whose aim is to look for evidence of extraterrestrial signals that could indicate the presence of other civilisations in the universe. As an inducement to people to participate in this distributed computing endeavour, they have provided a social club where people can chat and discuss things. There is the cafe for lighthearted banter, and the Politics forum for more serious matters. But it just seems to me that this politics place has become a magnet for fringe activists all wanting to push their particular view of life, which they seem unable to do elsewhere.

Linux users banging their drum
Intelligent Design advocates banging their drum
Religious zealots banging their drum
Climate change geeks banging their drum
Various weirdos banging their drum

God, we'll have the Flat earth Society here next! Add a few pipes to all these drums and we could start up our own military band! I think Seti's politics boards are being "used" by far too many minority viewpoints, cults, sects, off the wall outfits, etc etc to peddle their views. Yes I also post to this forum simply because I currently can do, and mainly to try to educate others, if I think I have something useful to say. But it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if it wasn't here any more.

So the question that I ask is - have we unwittingly become just another social networking site like Facebook and Twitter, that is overshadowing a scientific project? How many people regularly post here that have very minimal RAC? How many people just use this place just to bang on about their personal views, and in all honesty couldn't give a tuppenny damn about the Arecibo data? Is everybody happy about that, or is anyone else bothered about it?

Take a look at this and then pause and ask yourself "Why does any of the OP matter?". Judging by the credit, the project is healthy, that some crunchers choose to find out more about each other is likely irrelevant in the overall scheme of things, no matter what they choose to discuss.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Hi Chris !
I never publish in the political forum because my english is not rather good to express me on this very sensitive subject.
And as I don't wish to be badly understood, I don't prefer to express myself.
And nevertheless, I regret it !
But I can express myself on your comment.
I totally agree with you but when a forum is free of access and when no filter exists as for the selection of the proposed themes, it's the kind of drift that occurs.
But the most mattering in all this, in my humble opinion, it's because each is free to express his point of view. The majority as the minority.
Then, it's the community which decides to "buzz" on the open thread or not.
If one is forum is "buzzed", it's that the discussion captivates the community, that we agree or not.
The community which ignores a thread is the best penalty for a folk which publish only messages to brew of the air.

I find that Im posting more in the politics thread than in the cafe. Why you ask? It never was that way,Like most folks I thought, Only the brave ventured into the politics forum where dog eats dog and its a no holds barred knock down drag out fight every night.

However after becoming a mod, I had to come in here. I found that its isnt as bad as I thought. Yes it can be testy at times. But if you have an open mind to new ideas it is worth it. Do I agree with every thing said in here? NO not by a long shot. Does everyone have to agree with me. Hell no. How can I learn if I dont get others opinions.

Be happy that they allow us a stage to voice our likes and dislikes. If they did away with all the forums It would be boring just looking at your task list.

I've never agreed with his politics, but he did renounce his peerage of Viscount Stansgate to be an MP, which I respected him for.

That's why the conversations were interesting. Plus he originally assumed the non-commissioned members of the Armed Forces would be Labour supporters.
