Whenever my screensaver kicks in and I get a look at the date & time info of the current work unit my pc is working on it is disappointing to see dates from 2008 & 2009. I'm not all about the totals (though before the changeover to BOINC I was in the 99th percentile) I would like to feel like I wasn't just re-hashing data that has been combed over already just for the sake of participating.

You don't know that you are. It may be old data that was never looked at before. It may be old data that was deemed worthy of another look. It may be old data they're sending out again now that there's a new version of the app with a new type of signal to look for. But I doubt they'd send out old data just for the heck of it to keep your cruncher busy.

You are right David.
Eric mentioned they will send some older units worthwhile to recheck.

Thanks guys, that is reassuring. I wonder when any new work units are apt to be distributed.

Quite true.
We could re-process a lot of old work with the new applications and not consider it a waste of time or resources.

And not just for mutlibeam for the use of auto-correlation, either. Old data can benefit from another run-through with AP as well, especially since the radar-detection on the software-side has gotten a lot better over the years.

Nothing wrong with revisiting old tapes again, especially if the detection algorithms have gotten much better since the last time the data was processed. Odds are there won't be any new significant results, but we could get a more precise measurement of what was already found before.
