My current computer has a 3.2 GHz processor running Win XP SP 3. I am considering getting a new computer for general use with crunching as a secondary consideration. I'm looking at a Intel i5-3470 processor running Win 7. Would this be suitable for a basic machine that does some crunching as a secondary use? I am looking at Lenovo as a possible candidate for the new machine. Any comments on them as a vendor and quality of their products? Thanks in advance for any and all opinions. |

I5 is a good processor but i like the I7 ones a lot better. I have two I7 3770 running win 7 and a I7 920 running vista. [/quote] Old James |

You should do well and with a couple of low mid range video cards you should do very well, but make sure that you have/use a quality PSU though. Cheers. |

This is my new little 3.0GHz I5. It is a Gateway that I got through the EMachines class action lawsuit. Not bad for a free computer. :) http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7056323. I'm pretty happy with it. It also has a GTX650 SC in it. It's been running since July 31st and my RAC has hit 13,135 and a total credit so far of 557,131. Of course Lunatics has a lot to do with those numbers. Oh yes, I also upped the power supply to a 550 watt. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

Yup. Was just going to say the same thing. I built a new PC earlier this year, primarily as my workstation, but wanted to do a little more in the way of crunching than my old rig with a Q6600 from 2007. To my i7-4770K (which is absolutely great!), I added a GTX 560i card. Not sure I made the right decision on the card from a crunching perspective, but the card was reasonably priced and has overall good ratings. I'm a real heavy PC user, running most every MS Office app along with a web browser with about a dozen sites typically open at any given time. Also running two virtual XP PCs all the time. Stock install of BOINC Manager, allowing two CPU threads and 1 on the GPU. PC runs very well, cool and my RAC is usually between 9500 and 10K, depending on pending validations. Sorry to be so long winded! |
