Message 1415380 - Posted: 14 Sep 2013, 0:55:22 UTC

Got in my 99 Tahoe today and noticed all my little handy knobs have taken a dive towards Hell. Yes I know, I can google how to take door panels of, but I know Murphy is just waiting around the corner.
Do I really need a special tool? Should I buy new clips?

My oldest is not happy about me posting this, but then he hasn't offered to fix it or look at it, until he saw me posting here ;)

Clips will break for sure and or just not fasten correctly again. Can you find an inexpensive version of the tool? Not sure what is available where you are at but some thing like this.

Why take the door panels off?

This is Where 100% Silicone(in the color of your door panel) comes in handy and worth the cost.

You can Drill Thru CAREFULLY down the center of the knob. Then with correct size bead of silicone(cut the right size hole in dispensing cap), shoot Some Silicone into the hole. (you would have already, before doing the above, rigged up some bracing/clamp to push against the knob to hold in place), and now, install the bracing/clamp to knob to hold in place till dry.

Might need a razor/utility knife/putty knife to carefully disengage bracing/clamp from knob after drying(UNLESS YOU PUT A PRE-MADE/FITTED PLUG into the hole where you shot the silicone into-this could be Almost Anything lying around the house).

Viola! Maybe? Maybe Not.

Anyways, always better Shade Tree Engineer a Fix then to Buy Costly Tools and Trying to Remove Thangs.

By "knobs" do you mean the window winder/door handle or something else?

Cheers.

OK then, you shouldn't really need to remove the door panel.

If they are not held on by center screws then they are usually held on by spring clips.

Center screws are usually hidden under a cap in the pivot center of the handle if not exposed (the cap can be popped out with a very fine flat bladed screwdriver). [edit]Sometimes the screw cover is just a thin piece of fairly sturdy material in a similar fashion to the hub bearing cover of case fans[/edit]

If they use the clip system then either the clips wern't put in properly or the clips have lost their spring.

If using the spring clips then just buy new 1's, place the handle back in place and then just push inwards on the door lining very close to the pivot and you should see where to fit the new clips back in. [edit]small thin longnose pliers are handy here[/edit]

Cheers.

Trying to be helpful. Chris S would be proud of me.

I'll take your nasty advice and get out. A Nasty PM would be more appropriate to show hate.

This video on youtube shows door panel removal on that GM/GMC truck series.
However, one of the first things the guy does is simply snap out the switch control panel from the top of the armrest area of the door panel.
If that's what you need to fix or replace, taking the rest of the door panel apart should not be necessary.

Meow?

We shall see. Thank you for all you help. I will keep you posted.

This issue is now fixed. Thanks Wiggo, he didn't have to take the whole panel off.
Now we need to address the passenger side, as it can't be opened from the inside, that will involve taking the whole panel off.

@J, Dan will have to buy the tool at the formerly known Kragens. Got taken over by the Irish btw.

Again, thank you for all your help and suggestions. I will keep you posted.

Just glad I could help before you started pulling unnecessary things off to get 1 fixed at least.

Good luck with the other 1 and hopefully it's just other clip/circlip that has come adrift.

Cheers.

We think it is the cable. Not been on my priority list since I am not a passenger very often. Of course the kids have griped about it and now it is their hands to fix it. It also is a safety issue, so it should be taken care off.

I was never happy when they change the window lifters over to cables as they always stretch eventually and though I havn't seen them used in the locking department yet (so far I've only had to deal with rods) I imagine that the same thing will happen there to (if they do I hope that there's a way to adjust any stretch out).

Good luck with it anyway.

Cheers.

I prograstinated on fixing this and now the truck is toast.
Got a loud knock on the door at 1:30 AM. Fire Dept, your truck is on fire.
It was contained to the engine dept, of course a total loss.
Six other suspicious vehicle fires where reported. Three within four blocks and about the same time.
99% sure I am a victim of an Arsenist.
The Sheriffs were canvasing neighbor hood gas stations and think they have a suspect.
Not confirmed, but most likely gasoline was the exellerant and then a blow torch was used. The latter info was given to me by my claims adjuster.

Now of to Rocky's.
