If momma spider disappears, I want to bring the first egg sac into the house and put it in a comfy container so I can watch the babies emerge. Once they do, I'll put them outside. ~Sue~ |

If momma spider disappears, I want to bring the first egg sac Correct me if I'm wrong but don't they usually hold, like, hundreds of kids? Once the first ones pop out... :) Member of the People Encouraging Niceness In Society club. |

If momma spider disappears, I want to bring the first egg sac A bunch, yeah! I'll do something like stretch cheesecloth across the top so they can't escape. As soon as I see them coming out, I'll put them outside and take the top off the jar (or whatever). ~Sue~ |

Is it possible to post videos here the Yes, it's been done before. They have to be hosted on a server, and you just link to them the same as I do often with cat videos on youtube. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I didn't want to post the gnat larve snake video here. I thought maybe some people might want the choice to see it or not. ~Sue~ |

I didn't want to post the gnat larve snake video here. Well, then you post it with a caveat... "Sqeamish may not wish to click on the link..." Although I think your description may be deterrent enough. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Don't confuse the bug group with the critter group. If you have critter videos, post them in the critter group. (Cats are critters, although mine do bug me at times.) That being said... ...Dear Lord! My argiope spider has created yet another egg sac. That makes three! What a slut!!! (Although, as I said before, I haven't seen the male around lately.) ~Sue~ |

One of the three eggs sacs has gone missing. I don't know if it's the second or third sac that she made. Does anyone know of egg sac predators? ~Sue~ |

Another egg sac has gone missing, and the spider is gone, as well. It makes me sad. Oh well. I'll see some argiopes again next year. ~Sue~ |

:)))))) great picture Sue Very sorry to hear about the disappearing egg sacs :( Found this on a blog by Bug Eric Various parasites and predators can take their toll on the egg sacs and spiderlings, however. One study found that 19 species of insects and 11 species of other spiders emerging from the egg sacs of Argiope aurantia. Chief among the parasites were the ichneumon wasp Tromatopia rufopectus, and the chloropid fly, Pseudogaurax signatus. The overwhelming predators of the egg sacs are birds. Nearly every egg sac found in the wild during the study had suffered damage from birds :( |

:)))))) great picture Sue Interesting information. I've seen a lot of spider wasps around my house. I've entertained the thought that maybe they're responsible for the removal of the egg sacs. I suppose I'll never know, though. Now that mom's gone, maybe I'll take the last sac - which is actually the first sac - and bring it into the house over the winter. Maybe. Nature can be cruel, but it seems to know what it's doing. ~Sue~ |
