As I do neither I have often wondered why people who smoke cigarettes spend the money to drink bottled water. Especially in a community that prides itself on the cleanness of their tap water. Is it just because of fashion and the political correctness of drinking water from a bottle that has Dasani pasted across it? The poisons in that cigarette will kill you long before anything that is in most drinking water.

I drink bottled water when I'm not home for the convenience, but I avoid the fancy names if I have a choice. Actually, I don't like the taste of Dasani and Deja Blu. I don't know what they do to make me not like them, but I don't. My local store brand is usually the cheapest and tastes fine (it probably comes from the same source as the water in my own pipes, the City of Chicago's intake from Lake Michigan). At work, they've installed bottle fillers on some of the drinking fountains. They're really intended for you to use your reusable bottle, but I start off with a prepackaged bottle and then refill it until the end of the day and recycle it.

I don't smoke.

I've been out here since July 2004, next year that will be 10 years in one area, drinking the water here that comes from an aquifer that has limestone(calcium carbonate) and some iron, but is otherwise pure Dihydrogen monoxide, Grace likes it and I tolerate it, but then I use some crystal light fruit punch to make it taste better, Oh and I've never smoked, though I have had to breathe in the same air 2nd hand as a virtual smoke stack(My late Mother), as She smoked like one, I tossed out all Her cigs and ashtrays, got rid of Her clothes and didn't look back, of course I still have Her on a shelf, as ashes, kind of ironic really, She made lots of ashes and now She is ashes and I can't bury Her...

The most stupid thing about bottled water, that I know of, is the number of people, mainly tourists, that buy bottled water in Buxton.

I know it is horribly un-green, but I too cannot resist the convenience of a bottle of water in the car. I am just too frippin lazy to wash out a bottle every night.

Years ago when water in Mexico was questionable,(ok so it still is) there was a bottle water store in Cabo San Lucas. It sold bottled water from major US cities. You could buy New York City tap water, or LA tap water. All Americans in Cabo drank only bottled water. Even bottled tap water. Full how things repeat themselves.

By the way Dasani and Deja Blue are bottled tap water, filtered but still tap water. Dasani by Coke and Deja Blue by Dr.Pepper Snapple Group.

I filter my own.

But when ever there is a power outage or they have to shut the water off for repairs, All we see is silt when its turned back on. So I have a Britta filter on my kitchen sink for those times the water looks like sand and we need cooking water.The rest of the time I use the Britta pitchers with a filter. Plus I allways have on hand a case and a half of store bought water.

The worst part is the town wanted to run municple water up our street but just about everybody said no, It will cost to much.

My sons place is similar, but the water comes from natural springs. Two of the springs are classified as non-potable and used for everything except cooking and drinking. For the water from the potable water spring he has a high capacity filter, mainly to get rid of the lime, and an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation device, just to be safe.

Visitors do get confused to find three taps (spigot or faucet, translation for those over the pond) at the sinks.

I never buy bottled water, except for in the car.

I do not think smoking or not smoking has anything to do with it.
I live in a city that has a questionable civic water supply. Namely distillates that are in the ground water. The water company made the amazing discovery that if they took water from a good well, and pumped it into a bad well (let us just say for example 2x the designated safe limit) they could pump up twice the amount of water and it was still just under the limits. Saved them digging a new(and perhaps safe) well.

As far as bottled water goes, it is a terrible waste and an overload of plastics. But on the road, there is hardly any environmental difference between a plastic bottle of water, and a plastic soda bottle. Might be even better for the environment since there is no CO2 involved and no sugars are more than likely better for your health.

Dysani (spelling=not sure) is water bottled by the Coca-Cola corporation. After the huge release of it and terrific advertising campaign they revealed what it was. Pure tap water from whatever municipality they happened to be bottling it in. No filters, no purification, nothing. It was simply tap water.

Which is bottled water. Next step up would be purified water. This is domestic tap water run through some sort of filter.

And then there is Spring Water. It is bottled close to the source of a spring, runs through minimal piping, and has a higher standard to meet. Also note purified water will claim to be better because it has "fewer parts per (million/billion)" although they will decline to say of what. Not all impurities in water are negative, and in fact can provide some mineral supplement. And some make it taste better.

So it is really simple. And really complicated. And you do not always get what you think you are paying for.

The bottom line is that if you live in certain parts of the world like the UK, the ordinary tap water is fine. If you live anywhere else then you really have little choice but to buy bottled. You really would think that in the 21C in the civilised Western world, that potable tap water was a natural part of society, apparently not. Back to my previous point, why do women appear to need more hydration than men?

You don't HAVE to buy bottled water. This filter I'm using is really a good invention! The water goes through a kind of charcoal mixture and tastes really great. Couldn't do without it anymore...
