Think it's time you popped down to Bath as you're in the UK. A good session in a health spa might just wake you up to face the real world.

For one that uses, Apple, Microsoft & some distro's of Linux, to be called a troll from the biggest *nix troll in the UK, I see as a compliment. Thanks, much appreciated.

In the Linux world, the first fix and then the follow-on fix were available within hours. For some proprietary vendors, the fixes are yet to roll out...

Scratch Apple from that list. And patch files below if you need them
OS X bash Update 1.0 may be obtained from the following webpages:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1767 – OS X Lion
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1768 – OS X Mountain Lion
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1769 – OS X Mavericks

And for whatever systems left abandoned, they will only get noticed when they fail or cause a nuisance that is noticed...

Like Cisco, Actiontec, Netgear, Linksys .....

Merry Christmas All!

And here are a fun few placings opinions from the computing world of freedom:

Readers' Choice Awards 2014

It's time for another Readers' Choice issue of Linux Journal! The format last year was well received, so we've followed suit making your voices heard loud again. I couldn't help but add some commentary in a few places, but for the most part, we just reported results. Please enjoy this year's Readers' Choice Awards!

We'd like to make Readers' Choice Awards even better next year. Please send ideas for new categories and any comments or feedback.

Please see the December 2014 issue of Linux Journal for the complete list of winners.

There are some interesting selections in there...

Is this going to be the year of the Linux Desktop?... ;-) Or is all that now irrelevant as various proprietary vendors reinvent themselves?!

Or have mobile devices already taken over the connected world?

Two fun FLOSS gems from over the holidays:

For a bit of gaming fun, take a look at the YouTube demo for:

Xonotic 0.8 Is ... Closer To Being Released

There's been talk about Xonotic 1.0 plans going back years, but in reality, Xonotic 0.7 has been the current stable release for the past year and a half while Xonotic 0.8 is slowly coming together as the next version.

Xonotic 0.8 is packing countless improvements and new features. For those curious what Xonotic 0.8 is looking like this holiday season, embedded below is a Xonotic 0.8 video that was produced by the Xonotic crew to show off new features...

And for how to view your own "home theatre" easily, try:

(Note: "XBMC/Kodi" is the media suite and "OpenElec" wraps a full Linux distro around that.)

Kodi 14.0 Released For The Holidays - Formerly Known As XBMC

... the Kodi Library has seen significant improvements, add-on improvements were merged, layout support has been added for the virtual keyboard, hardware deinterlacing on the Linux version of Kodi for certain hardware, PVR improvements witrh ASTC sub-channel support, and numerous other enhancements.

More details on the Kodi 14.0 changes that are out in time for Christmas can be found via Kodi.tv.

OpenELEC 5.0 Released, Powered By Kodi 14.0

Released this Sunday was OpenELEC 5.0 as one of the more popular XBMC (now known as Kodi) multimedia Linux distributions.

OpenELEC 5.0 is powered by the brand new Kodi 14 "Helix", a switch to the Linux 3.17 kernel, migration from OpenSSL to LibreSSL, and various other package updates. OpenELEC 5.0 has also been enabled for more ARM platforms like the Freescale i.MX6 found in the CuBox-i and CuBoxTV devices.

More details on OpenELEC 5.0 via openELEC.tv.

All by the power of FLOSS and there's no need to sell your soul!

Looks like steadily more people yet will be using some flavour of Linux in 2015:

All Of Samsung's 2015 Smart TVs To Be Powered By Tizen

... We've been waiting for Samsung to ship more Tizen devices and it looks like 2015 will finally be the year! In 2015 is when they finally launched their first Tizen smartphone and for fostering these efforts they've been hiring more Linux / open-source engineers.

Other Tizen devices include the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches and Samsung NX1 photo camera. We've been known about Samsung's Tizen TV plans since they showed off prototypes last year at the Tizen Developer Conference. Tizen 2.3 is the latest official release of the Linux-based platform while Tizen 3.0 is under active development...

Android KitKat x86 Updated With Linux 3.18, Better Suspend/Resume

... Android-x86 4.4-r2 is the second stable update to KitKat for Intel/AMD processors. This update has various x86-specific improvements targeted for tablets and netbooks.

First up, Android-x86 4.4-r2 has been upgraded to the Linux 3.18 kernel for having the latest stable kernel experience and more drivers being enabled by default. This switch to Linux 3.18 should especially help out Intel Bay Trail users wishing to run Android on their hardware...

HP To Launch Linux++ Operating System Next Year [2015]

Hewlett Packard is going to introduce their "revolutionary" new operating system next summer that's dubbed Linux++...

Linux Deepin 2014.2 Makes It Out Just In Time For The New Year

... Deepin Linux with its original desktop environment claims to have been downloaded tens of millions of times and in use in more than 40 countries around the globe. Deepin 2014.2 delivers new themes, drag-and-drop reordering support for the Dock icons, launcher improvements, improved multi-screen support, network improvements, system notification improvements, tablet support, and other updates focused around its HTML5-based desktop...

"Google Android" moving onto Intel and AMD standard PCs/Laptops/Netbooks/Tablets looks to be an interesting move... Meanwhile, what new Linux("++") based machine is HP soon to bring out?...

Deepin Linux looks to be very cleanly interesting by using the web-standard HTML5 for the desktop. (OK, so that is yet another desktop amongst a plethora of desktops, but hey! Choice is good! Especially when you have a choice of more than just one...)

All by the power of FLOSS and there's no need to sell your soul!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015!

Indeed Linux is hitting the world:

It's also a good idea to review the firmware version powering routers and check to see if there's a security update available.

It's a good thing Windows powers most internet routers... oh wait.

I'm thinking of buying Linux' after my Windows computers have all died. I feel like I'm supporting pure Capitalism when buying Windows :/

I really don't want to support Bill Gates anymore, especially after reading this article:

Julie .....

Bill gates has nothing much to do with the day to day running of Microsoft any more. He took his money and walked away some time ago. He now concentrates on his charitable foundation with his wife. John W. Thompson is Chairman, and Satya Nadella is CEO. Bill has a role as Technology Advisor for pocket money.

The link to the site you quoted is an activist site, whose opinion you can take with a pinch of salt. Don't be too easily influenced by what you read.

If you feel that Linux is for you then fine, go ahead, but you will be in the minority, and find that there is limited software for it. I'm happy to stay with the older versions of Windows, and I will NOT be coerced into buying the latest Windows every 2 years, just to keep Microsoft in business.

I still have a full set of MSDOS 6.22 disks, plus a full set of WFWG 3.11 disks. I am very tempted to install all that on a spare machine and hook up to Seti, for the sole 100% purpose of pissing Microsoft off. If I can find the time to do it I'll involve the popular press.

It's not the site's opinion I'm concerned about Chris, it's the content of the article. Steve Jobs thought he was God and I think Bill Gates has the same mindset :/

umm umm ummm, I think Jobs to a certain extent did view himself as that, but he founded Apple, who think they are gods gift to the world anyway. Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft (Microprocessor Software) from a contract to supply IBM software. Paul too has walked away, in both cases because the Marketing and Accountants were allowed to take control and over-rule the engineers.

Hahahahaa! True:)) I will never give one cent to Apple, never have and never will!

BOINC & SETI are Win32 applications. Even if you were to install Win32s in Windows 3.1x, you would not be able to run BOINC and/or SETI on such a machine. At the least, you would need Windows 95 and IE 5 (because certain libraries that are used only come with Internet Explorer - blame the coders for that).

An "activists" site?? Really?!...

How would you list this link then to The Vultures comments?

Windows 7 MARKED for DEATH by Microsoft as of NOW

Note that behind all the irreverent comments and humour, they are usually very sharp for the technical details...

If you feel that Linux is for you then fine, go ahead, but you will be in the minority, and find that there is limited software for it.

There's more people than you imagine use Linux systems of various types and all so unobtrusively that they are not noticed... There's also a growing number using one of the many Linux distributions. The only problem there is being spoilt for choice! Good mainstream ones to try or take a look at are such as:

Kubuntu
Ubuntu
Mageia4
Mint (and a Mint review)

... And others.

Take a look on YouTube for the sort of thing to expect.

The greatest hurdle is to clear some disk space (back up all your data first) to install the software.

You can run what are called "LiveCD"s to run Linux entirely from the CD/DVD only and not touch your hard disk at all. However, CDs/DVDs are hideously slow compared to a HDD and so you see things happen after quite a pause (although amazing it can work as well as it does from such media!).

Ask questions and good luck!

And there is more software available than you can ever hope to need to use. Don't be tempted to try loading up 'everything'!

(OK, did that once and you get so many entries in the menus that you can then never find anything!)

I'm happy to stay with the older versions of Windows, and I will NOT be coerced into buying the latest Windows every 2 years, just to keep Microsoft in business.

Odd approach...

You could run a Linux distro and run Boinc + S@H on WINE. Indeed, all the old XP users can run their old XP software on WINE... Quite a giggle!

(WINE is on all the main Linux distros. You may need to install some Windows software into WINE and have the appropriate Windows licenses for your software to be EULA compliant... WINE then 'fools' the Windows software that it is running on Windows.)

Freedom has some costs but nothing like the costs of suffering proprietary entrapment.

Have fun!

Perhaps that's an unfortunate side effect of wielding proprietary control.

Very few people have the almost religious caring or detachment to even be able to be benevolent when wielding control over others... All a part of how some people play games?...

As an aside to that, hence there should be great concern for what gets sucked up into the various 'clouds'. Are people happy (or even aware) that all their data/work/life held in whatever cloud might be lost or given away for free or used to make money for others?...

There's now quite a few FLOSS projects that allow you to run your own private cloud for yourself...

Why bother with WINE? One could simply run BOINC and SETI natively on Linux.
