My puppy is about 7 months old now and very active. Last week while I was recovering from having my gall bladder removed some friends of mine kept her at their house. They also have an adult Lab so they kept each other company. Yesterday my friend brought my puppy back and she was very happy to see me but I think maybe she might have been just as happy to stay with them. Last night when she was sleeping her tail started wagging furiously for about a minute and then it eventually stopped. She never appeared to wake up so I am guessing she was dreaming about her three days with another family.

Tail wagging while asleep is fun to watch, but not as much fun as "horizontal rabbit chasing" - sound asleep on their side with their legs going like they are chasing a rabbit and the rug they are on moving in random motion as it slide cross the floor bumping into things or being dragged to "safety" by a human.
Sleeping dogs can be a source of entertainment :-)

Glad to see you are up and about Bob

Mickey likes to sleep by my feet under my computer desk while I'm working (OK, gaming) late at night. I have often heard her audibly making noises from her mouth (snoot?) and her paws were noticeably moving as if she were chasing or trying to escape from something. When it sounded like it was a nightmare, I have stopped what I was doing to wake her and console her.

I too think dogs can dream.

I hope yours give you lots of company during your recovery. Nothing helps to heal faster than loving pets, and puppy kisses are special! :-)

I know that cats can... I've seen many cats twitch their paws like they're playing with something; but, they're sound asleep...

Do dogs and cats really dream?

How many pet owners have gotten a chuckle out of watching their dog sleep while its paws race frenetically in place?

I've never seen Grace do this, but then usually She's either under the bed or out of sight around the corner somewhere, but then I don't have x-ray vision...

Thanks for the link Lynn. I have also never observed this in my cats, but then again, they like to spend most of their time in the back yard. Guess what, sleeping.

There was an episode of TNG where Data described watching Spot sleep. He wondered what she could be dreaming about that would cause her to appear agitated, since she had never seen a mouse or any other rodentia on the ship and never been chased by a canine.

How strange that you mention Mice. Our adobe had one last night and was just renatured outside. Poor thing, Ziggy and Tinker, never had any skill in mousing, chased it into the neighbors yard. Now a cat I haven't seen before is chasing it. Sniff, I am rooting for the mouse. When I saw it curled up in my living room corner, I am sure it had nightmares.

Saw that one, the only StarTrek episode that I know of with a cat in it.

Spot appeared several times. She even saved the whole crew once, sort of.

Data observed that her kittens hadn't de-evolved like every other living being on the ship; based on this, he used amniotic fluid from Nurse Ogawa to synthesize a cure for Barclay's Proto-Morphosis Syndrome. Dr. Crusher thought having a disease named for him would keep Barclay happy for a while, but Troi said she'd better clear her schedule for the next couple of weeks.

(Also, in the Animated Series, the Communications officer was felinoid, not humanoid.)

Gonzo used to move and shake, open her eyes and make funny noises when she was asleep. Happy does that too, except for the funny noises then. She remains quiet.

I've never owned a dog, but my parents have always kept a cat (at my mother's behest, father isn't too keen on them), there have been four through the house in my time and i've never yet observed any of them moving in their sleep. Particularly Charlie (the current one), who sleeps like he's been stuffed.

Maybe we've just had weirdly inanimate cats.

Funny thing about Spot. The critter was always male, until they needed him to have kittens. Then suddenly he was she. Doesn't seem like the kind of error Data might make. Spot also appeared in the one where Data has nightmares and stabs Troi (Data asked Worf to take care of him -- "You must feed him. And he will require a sandbox. And water. And you must tell him he is a good cat, and a pretty cat." "I will feed him." "Perhaps that will be sufficient." <ah-choo>). In A Fistful of Datas, Data tells him to "vamoose, ya little varmint" when Spot gets on his desk. Several others. Riker also cared for him once and got scratched. Geordi borrowed him to see if he wanted a cat of his own (he didn't). I'm sure in each case, they only needed to have the cat on the set for one day of shooting.

I don't think I've ever seen Baby do it either, but then I rarely see him sleeping that deeply.
