Basically, a sidewalk is almost always concrete (old ones, or new ones made to look old, can be brick) and runs alongside a roadway, or leads from a roadway or other place where vehicles are operated or parked to the door of a building (the latter type can also be stone). Anything other than that is a footpath, whether it's a dirt trail through the woods or a gravel or asphalt trail on what used to be a railroad right of way (these are usually intended for riding bikes and horses as well). There is some overlap in the case of one going across a park, or university campus, or something of that sort, and not alongside a roadway but still constructed of concrete. At least that's how it is in my mind. But then, I'm the one who ruled that spiders are bugs.
