I watched live a press conference by Prefetto Gabrielli, head of Italian Civilian Protection and ing. Girotto of Micoperi. It was in Italian. They should have hired a simultaneous translator like a girl I knew in Trieste where there is a translators school frequented by pretty girls.A great job by Nick Sloane who drank a beer, kissed his wife and waved a South African flag.

Costa Concordia salvage: what happens now? This link includes a time-lapse video of the parbuckling operation (01:29).

Live coverage: Costa Concordia salvage operation a success This article contains several photographs showing the damage to the starboard side of the ship.

It was upright at 2am London time, but I had gone to bed earlier when it was about half way, thinking they would resume at dawn, I didn't realise they were going to continue all night. The damage on the submerged side is quite substantial now it can be seen, so no chance of a re-build only for scrapping now.

With all the corrosion from the salt water, scrapping is Her fate and the ship would be a nightmare to clean, She was in the water for 20 months, soon She will only be a wiki footnote somewhere.

They have got two bodies to search for and 1500 safes to open yet. And it has to be inspected and strengthened where necessary. It won't be actually moved for another 6 months until next Spring.

If there are any remains at all that is, the sea may have already claimed the bodies, but hopefully something is left to recover, beside two pairs of shoes. Yes spring, before then the ship needs to be reinforced for towing and then pumped out, if the hull is able to be made watertight again. 1500 safes to be recovered, that will be interesting to hear how well that will go. Some of the salvage crew has been nicknamed 'the Magnificent Eleven'.

Even if she had been repairable, would anyone want to travel on her?

I recall a story from when the Titanic sank, as you probably know the Carpathia was first on the scene. She had been outbound from New York, but after she picked up the Titanic survivors she returned to New York.
On the way she received a message from the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, who was heading in to New York and offered to take the survivors allowing Carpathia to continue her original journey. However, the Carpathia's captain refused fearing that seeing an almost mirror image of Titanic pull up and being instructed to board might precipitate panic in the survivors.

That makes sense, it would be bit much to ask people who survived the sinking of one death trap to get on an identical one, where Ismay could probably take over again... Of course there was that other ship that refused to turn around that was nearer and that could have rescued a lot more people, but didn't.

According to recordings from the ship's bridge from the vessel's black box, Schettino directed the helmsman to turn "hard to starboard" in English, but the helmsman can be heard asking "hard to port?" The helmsman then turned the ship right instead of left just 13 seconds before it hit the rocks.

Given: Port = left, Starboard = right, the above doesn't make sense?
