1st, we got A LOT of TIME till 2135!

2nd, the strike 2181, 2187, 2191, 2193, 2194, 2197 encounter (data from here: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/a101955.html) is 40y from close fly-by...plenty of time to divert it!

3rd, still think painting the asteroid with simple "black paint" will do the job! Just have to hit it & hit it on right spot...

I won't be around 2135. In the mean time, hope NASA gets some info on the rock.

Earth's a very small target in the vastness of space. There are very probably a lot more Earth-passing tweaks that would send Bennu farther from Earth on subsequent passes, instead of on a collision course.

That's why the mission is here!

another asteroid on y 2029 was determined to go: "Out of Keyhole"!

If A.C. Clarke was right no significant progress will be made in collision avoidance until we get hit by a city killing size rock.

Look Up! Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Aug. 11-12

Make plans now to stay up late or set the alarm early next week to see a cosmic display of “shooting stars” light up the night sky. Known for it’s fast and bright meteors, the annual Perseid meteor shower is anticipated to be one of the best potential meteor viewing opportunities this year.

...poke a camera out of the window all night, lots of "nice" pictures of total overcast and rain, not one star let alone a meteor :-(

(So glad I'm using a DSLR these days as feeding a film camera with 1000 frames worth of film would be "rather expensive")

Batteries on charge and memory cards cleared ready for another try tonight.....

Canadian meteorite may be first visitor from the Kuiper belt

A fireball that streaked through the sky over a decade ago may have brought the first meteorite from the outskirts of the solar system.

Most meteorites found on Earth are thought to start out in the asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter, but the makeup of the Tagish Lake meteorite, which fell on an icy lake in Canada’s British Columbia in 2000, bears little resemblance to other space rocks.

Close one. Glad it missed earth.

Earth gets close shave from newly discovered asteroid

An asteroid gave Earth a close shave on Sunday, just a day after astronomers first spotted the object.

The newfound asteroid 2016 QA2 zoomed within 50,000 miles or so of the planet. For perspective, the moon orbits Earth at an average distance of 239,000 miles.

Astronomers think 2016 QA2 is between 80 and 180 feet wide. That means the space rock is slightly bigger than the object that exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February 2013, injuring more than 1,200 people.

NASA is sending Osiris-Rex to capture a piece of Bennu asteroid and bring it back to Earth. It will take eight years.

Earth Vulnerable to Major Asteroid Strike, White House Science Chief Says

The world is still vulnerable to a potentially catastrophic asteroid strike, according to President Barack Obama's chief science adviser.

NASA has made substantial progress in finding the asteroids that pose the biggest threat to Earth, but there's still a lot of work to do, said John Holdren, director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy.

So how much do they pay this guy to make these illuminating glimpses at the obvious. So if we found one that was due to hit the Earth--what are we going to do what is the Plan.

there are several plans, like: lasers melting, mirror melting, gravitational pull, folia wrapping (don't think that will work), deflection by engines, etc.

At the current time, I don't think that these are actionable plans. They are quasi-scientific musings that no one could implement now or in the near future.

It may take a disaster here on Earth to get humanity seriously working on this potential problem.

We cannot stop quakes or volcano eruptions. All we can do is to minimize effects.
Same for asteroid damages.

I'm curious Lynn but to where is it transferred?

yes, if we don't have time! then a global evacuation of people from one side to the other has to be made...

but on some of them ,we got decades of time on our hands to push them or pull them out of the way...

Near the village of Isnello, Sicily, a new telescope has been inaugurated on the summit of Monte Mufara at 1865 meter height, named Gal Hassin. It is not a big telescope, one meter diameter mirror, but has wide field capability (seven square degrees) and will be used also to track Near Earth Objects. The site also holds a Planetarium with several refracting telescopes and a small 2.3 meters radio telescope. It will be used also for educational purposes. Go Sicily!
