This gal used to hang around a lot in my backyard
until I started letting the cats out.

I throw seeds out for the squirrels and our outdoor cat just lazes about, dispassionately watching the squirrels eat.

Cats are meat eaters, the squirrel fled for its life, there was a study in the UK on this, House Cats are hunters, so much so that they're banned down in Australia I hear, as some animals aren't setup to cope with a predator like a cat.

Really???!!! There are no house cats in Australia???!!! Are you sure?

Cats have been our species' domestic partners for a long, long time. I find it difficult to imagine an entire continent without house cats.

Cats have been our species' domestic partners for a long, long time. I find it difficult to imagine an entire continent without house cats.

Maybe there are, but you can't take your cat with you if you emigrated, I think, Monday might know more, but this here might explain it. I quoted a section of what I found on this site.

In 1992 Australia's first cat registration and curfew was introduced in Sherbroke, Victoria. Proposed bills covering "companion animals" and "feral and nuisance animals" now under review in Victoria include some draconian measures:

Councils empowered to ban cats from premises or areas in the municipality.
Cats found in cat-free zones could be impounded, desexed or killed.
Cat registration; owners having to inform the council of changes of address.
Breeder registration; councils being allowed to refuse registration renewals.
Cats to wear identification markers.
Cats found outdoors after curfew could be seized.

Other councils are using the Sherbroke example in formulating their own cat control laws. New South Wales is considering:

$200 registration fee for an unneutered cat, $5 for a neutered cat.
Restrictions on the number of cats per household

And the Gold Coast City Council is considering:

Compulsory registration.
Fines of up to $5,000 for owners of "recalcitrant" cats.
Curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Cats to be kept on a leash when outdoors and not allowed to enter another property or foul a public place.
Unsupervised cats outdoors may be seized.
Owners must not allow cats to "attack, kill, worry or torment, pursue, endanger, injure or destroy poultry, birds or other animals."
No person may dispose of a cat or any litter by sale, gift or trade unless each kitten has been neutered.

Our neighborhood cats don't seem to bother Gary's cousin. Which made it's home in a tree across the street.

That is wrong Vic, of course you can. But it has to have vaccinations first and be microchipped, and go in quarantine.

Cats to Australia

The following article is copyrighted by Sarah Hartwell and presented by the Feral Cat Coalition.

Not surprisingly, this has led to pro-cat and anti-cat camps in Australia, with dubious survey statistics being used to fuel the debate.

Vic, you have over reacted to a fringe element report.

Chris I did say 'I think'...

As to the report, how was I to know? Though some animals and birds down there aren't accustomed to such an animal as a house cat.

New species of wing-mouthed toad?

(Monday may not want to look at this.)
(No, it's okay. It has a happy ending.)

The cats I would bring... I think a Dingo might think twice... Ever see a Savannah???

A Savannah, fully grown, is 35 lbs. They are a special breed of cat; bred down from the African Serval Cat and mixed with domestic cats down to about F3 or F4 are usually tame enough to be house cats... They like to play fetch with their owners, and are loyal and loving creatures. I think a sole Dingo would have a hard time with a full grown Savannah.

Ian, you could always go for a slightly smaller special breed cat... Try the Bengal, they only get to be 20 lbs. fully grown. They LOVE water, will go swimming, and love people! :-)

Speaking of cats, you know how they like to leave dead critters as presents for their humans. Baby left me one the other day, but lacking a bird or mouse, he left me a dead cricket that made the mistake of coming into the house.
