Posting before driving to the dealership to get the inverter cooling pump changed out. Didn't look for a 2nd hand part as Toyota has 'continuous improved' (=redesigned) them for better reliability. Didn't try to fit it myself because they are a pig to bleed without an 'Air Lift' which I'm not going to get for the one job. The Power Split Device (see diagram) is a three shaft fixed gearset very like a differential but no two shafts have the same ratio. The HV DC bus (red and black lines) transfers power bidirectionally between MG1 and MG2 Inverters, with the HV Battery 'balancing the budget'. The regeneration, energy storage and ability to run in EV mode are certainly important, but the electrical power transfer MG1<->MG2 is crucial - one way presents the ICE with low/intermediate gearing to the wheels, the other gives overdrive.
