I'm about to upgrade the guts of my old Q6600 rig with 3570K parts.

I've always just created a new PC in my list in the past, but this time I want to keep the old rig's ID on the new rig so what is the best way to do this?

I plan on running all the GPU work out 1st and copying both BOINC folders so that they can just be copied onto the new rig, but do I install BOINC 1st or copy both folders in and do a repair install of BOINC?

Cheers.

Once you have Windows installed, copy the BOINC data folder to where you want it and then install BOINC and point it to the location of the data folder.

Thanks arkayn, that's pretty much what I thought, but it's nice to have confirmation. ;-)

I find it also helps to put BOINC on its own partition (you only need about 10GB).

That way you can do what you like with the OS partition and not disturb the BOINC files.

I have all intentions of putting it on my 1TiB hard drive (D) as I don't want it on my SSD (C), but thanks anyway T.A.

Are you keeping the hard drive from your old rig? If yes, then all you will need to do is add drivers for any new hardware, the wondows instalation itself might be salvagible.. might save you a few hrs <& a lot of downloading> of install & updates. I too have been rebuilding a pc, a Dell 4600. I found the easist way to reinstall / upgrade windows from xp to win 7 was from a bootible usb drive with all the windows files on it. Be sure to use a usb 2 port for this.

No I'm not, but I will be docking the old drives to just transfer important data to the new 1's and I like to do a fresh OS install whenever I change a motherboard anyway (it gets rid of a lot of old unwanted crap and problems). Also the Q6600 is Win7 32bit anyway (it will also be going into another case for the kids) and the 3570K upgrade is Win7 64bit so I don't have any problems there either (BTW I've been building systems for over 15yrs now if you didn't already know). ;-)

Thanks anyway.

Cheers.

I'd still put BOINC on a small partition on the 1TB drive. All my crunchers run a 10GB "W:" drive for BOINC. This also helps if you want to move an installation from one computer to another.

I won't worry about going to that extreme T.A. as I never have a problem knowing where my files are. ;-)

But wouldn't you know it, every time I get new toys to play with, more work comes in. :-(

I think that I may have to invest in another external hard drive again as the 3 I currently have here for backups are full of other peoples backups presently, but hopefully I can get 1 clear tomorrow so I can do my backup of this rig before I start stripping the case out.

Cheers.
