The pandoravirus, as they’ve dubbed it, is 1,000 times bigger than the flu virus by volume and has nearly 200 times as many genes — 2,556 all told.

Scary.

Thanks, I.D.

Some people have long prophesied that human life on earth will be wiped out one day by super viruses.

The virus, dubbed Pandoravirus, is one micrometre big - up to ten times the size of other viruses - and only six per cent of its genes resemble anything seen on Earth before. This has led French researchers to believe the virus may have come from an ancient time or even another planet, such as Mars.

In other words they simply don't know its origin. It is thought many bacteria and viruses do get here via meteorites, but they are hardly likely to directly emanate from a dead planet. Typical Daily Mail Hype.

Wouldn't a virus that big have a hard time penetrating our cells and infecting us?
