Hello Friends,

Eric and I spent some time in Wisconsin visiting with his parents and attending our niece Rachel's wedding. Now we are in New York treating another treasured niece, Emily, to a vacation in celebration of her thirteenth birthday.

Traveling with Eric always brings out the comedian in him, and occasionally I have a moment or two as well...

Standing In Front Of The Statue Of Liberty
Auntie Angela: I used to belong to the Statue of Liberty Club
Emily: What's that?
Auntie Angela: You know... "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" - these were the men I dated before I met Uncle Eric.

Standing On The Torch Side Of The Statue
Uncle Eric: It is a French statue, so you know what's under that toga, right?
Emily: No, what?
Uncle Eric: A hairy armpit!

Standing Behind the Statue:
Uncle Eric: Baby got back!!!

Standing In Line Waiting To Board A Ferry Back To Battery Park:
Below the dock floating in the water there happened to be a er... uh.... um.... used device worn by men to er... uh.... um... prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Uncle Eric: Look, it's the most common fish in the Hudson!

At Dinner, Trying An Amuse Bouche Of Octopus On An Eggplant Puree
Emily: I don't know what it was, but I ate it and it was good.

After Seeing Wicked:
Uncle Eric: The happily ever after ending just ruined it for me.
Auntie Angela: And I love you too, dear.

Hello again! Yesterday was an action packed day. We started with breakfast at Rockefeller Center, which in the winter is an ice rink but in the summer is a casual outdoor cafe. We spent the morning mostly window-shopping on Madison Avenue. Eric made a bee line for the "bored husband chair" most stores were kind enough to provide. I must confess that, with the encouragement of a 13 year old, and despite the derision of a certain nameless astronomer, I am now the proud owner of a stylish pair of Italian leather pumps that absolutely kill my feet, but that make my legs look like they go on and on for miles. I have christened the pair my "midlife crisis shoes". In the afternoon we had matinee tickets to see Annie, which was fun because our niece (the family thespian) was the star of Annie a couple of years ago in a community theatre production in her hometown of Washburn Wisconsin. After that we had a horse carriage ride through Central Park. (Do ALL horses smell like that, or was our horse exceptionally flatulent?) After dinner, we went up to the viewing platform on the Empire State Building for a fabulous panoramic view of the city at night.

A few funny moments from our trip....

Emily: (Fiddling with her dinner napkin) "Aren't there napkin rules?"
Auntie Angela: "Yes, napkin etiquette is easy to learn. If you get up mid-meal to powder your nose, you place your napkin on your chair, to spare your dining companion(s) from viewing your soiled napkin. At the end of the meal, when everyone is leaving, you place your soiled napkin on the table casually. Never refold it."
Uncle Eric: "Auntie Angela forgot a few rules."
Auntie Angela: "Hoo boy..."
Uncle Eric: "Never ball up your napkin and throw it at your dining companion... unless your dining companion is Auntie Angela." (Eric then pretends to throw a napkin at me.) "Also, if you are given a paper napkin, never rip up pieces of it to roll tobacco for cigarettes or to roll up other herbaceous products... at least not at the table."
Auntie Angela: "When we get back to Wisconsin, your sister is going to murder you!!!"

In a cab, after perhaps a tad too much wine on my part...

Auntie Angela: (in her best singing voice) "They say the neon lights are bright..."
Uncle Eric: "... on Broadway"
Auntie Angela: "... but looking at them just gives me..."
Uncle Eric: "...the runs"

Yes, and yes...

Glad to see you are both enjoying yourselves, even if your nice may be mentally scarred for life due to such a close encounter with Eric's "humour"...

I do notice he omitted at least one part of napkin etiquette... the bit out sucking red wine out :-)

Chris - I thought that was one of the unwritten parts of the etiquette that only applies to monogrammed napkins.
