it doesn't seem there's a "Do work while computer is in use?" option anymore (or i'm too stupid to find it).

i CANNOT have it crunching all day!

It's still there in my account preferences. "Suspend work while computer is in use?"

Though the option reads the other way and I don't recall it ever being "Do work while computer is in use?" because most people want to stop it crunching while they're using the computer.

What I think you're looking for is "Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last" so that if you don't move the mouse or touch the keyboard, it stops crunching so your computer can go into standby.

... and I don't recall it ever being "Do work while computer is in use?"

On web 'Computing preferences' it is:
Suspend work while computer is in use?
Suspend GPU work while computer is in use?

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global

In 'Local preferences' it is:
Computing allowed:
[v] While computer is in use
[ ] Use GPU while computer is in use
