For several months now, I've had a problem with my pc seeming to freeze up. When I turn on the monitor I see a Boinc message but nothing wakes up the pc. Keyboard doesn't work, inserting a jump drive doesn't activate, nothing happens. I have to force a power off and reboot. Things run fine for a while but in a couple of days or so, lockup. Any ideas? I think this started after an upgrade of Boinc. |

This could be cause by several things, overheating, failing power supply, memory or hard drive going bad, bad drivers, etc. 1st check your CPU temps (does the heatsink need cleaning). 2nd I'd run memtest86+ to check the memory. 3rd download from your hard drive manufacturer's drive fitness test software to test your hard drive. Also check your event viewer to see if you have any problems being flagged there. There are other things that I probably havn't covered but I'm sure that others will add more. Cheers. |

I had the same problem a couple of months ago on my XP box. I swapped out the memory, ran check disc, virus scan, etc all to no avail. Finally I went to add/remove programs. I removed the most recently added program which I did not recall installing and the problem went away. |

A post to another question suggested "System Information Viewer" from the site http:/rh-software.com Know anything about it? Safe site? Other recommendations? I recently had to replace the cpu cooling fan but I've had this problem since then. Also, it appears to continue logging events based on a log in the sys admin tools section as event logs occurred during the time I knew I couldn't get access. I left the pc running for several hours to see if it would eventually give me back access. I will check the items you listed. Thanks for the input. |

I have almost the same problem on an old Dell P4. I think a few others here have reported the same problem I have with other old P4s. After about two days, the BOINC Manager freezes. Any running task gets 'stuck' and will continue to run until you manually force quit it. I had one 5 hour task that had run for two days before I checked on it. Those 'stuck' task are marked as a 'Computation Error' if you report it. In my case, it's just the Manager that freezes, the rest of the machine works. I installed Ubuntu on that host and it ran for 28 days without a problem before I turned it off. I suspect it's something involving Win XP and BOINC on a P4... |
