Happy birthday to the Dominion of Canada (<1982) and Canada (>1982). But we'll leave those Frenchies in Quebec out of it, damn troublemakers.

Same with the Frenchies over here, nothing but trouble...:))

Yup. And almost as snooty as the Brits.

Celt, there is no disrespect to Canada as a Nation. I have family in Vancouver Island, Fort St. John, and Calgary, and friends in Vancouver itself. But you have to remember this

Quebec independence debates have played a large role in the politics of the province. Parti Québécois governments held referendums on sovereignty in 1980 and 1995; both were voted down by voters, the latter defeated by a very narrow margin. In 2006, the House of Commons of Canada passed a symbolic motion recognizing the "Québécois as a nation within a united Canada.

A certain faction within Canada want Independence, I say let them have it and let them leave the Commonwealth. In the meantime I celebrate with the rest of the REAL Canadians.

I think they'd regret going independent after a bit.

Oh and I think I have some very distant relatives in Quebec, but then I am of French descent, via Ireland.

I'll tell you a little story about Canada. My paternal Grandad as a young man, went to Canada from 1905-10 to seek his fortune. Never made or found one of course, but he became pals with another English chap whilst logging in Alberta. One day in the heat of the summer they both went skinny dipping in a local lake, and someone reported them to the RCMP, who came looking for them. They split up, and did a runner, and Grandad eventually worked his passage back home on a cattle boat.

He then got married, served in WW1, and survived to tell the tale. He lived to his early nineties, and to his dying day he always reckoned that he was still on the wanted list by the Mounties for public nudity. I reckon the old scapegoat was actually quite proud of it! So I have a soft spot for Canada :-)

Me too, My Grandpa on My Mom's side was Canadian, He wanted to go back to Canada in 1929 and take the family with Him, Grandma and the 3 kids didn't want to leave Texas cause of the schooling the kids were getting at a Catholic school, He left for Canada, that was the last We'd heard of Him, Grandma got a divorce on the grounds of desertion, when the 3 were old enough, all 4 came to California(My Grandma, My Mom, Aunt and Uncle), Grandma was a seamstress and one fine cook too, She also did some mosaics too, one of which I have up on the wall and the other is too large to hang easily.

Back in the late sixties I had just been posted to a place called Camp Borden in the province of Ontario after having just served a term in West Germany. I was so used to the fact that western European countries had a make-since attitude about human waste functions: I forgot about the white Presbyterian laws that were in place in Upper Canada.
While driving up to Wasaga Beach with one my older brothers we stopped for pee break at the side of the road, I made it to the shoulder of the road while my brother was still going, looking for a place that could not be seen by the traffic. Later he started berating me for risking a fine from the police for breaking the decency laws then in place. Those laws may well still be on the books, and knowing the people that live there; I expect the only defence in court could be a plea of temporary insanity.
The kind of police they have there are still very persistent.

Things we wish Americans knew about us, from Huffington Post Canada.

I haven't finished reading it yet (only on #53), but some of them sound good. Somebody please send me a bag of ketchup potato chips.
