I had a motherboard go out and had to do an emergency rebuild of my computer recently. Ever since I fired it up, I've been having trouble with my SETI projects getting tied up in BOINC. As of right now, I've got ~100 WU's that are ready to report, but I keep getting a "Communications Deferred" as I wait for them to go. If I attempt to update the project it will freak BOINC out, where I'll need to physically uninstall and reinstall, which seems to get me going for a while - then it starts again. Any ideas? |

Hmmm... What did you do? Buy a new motherboard and transplant the hardware components over to it? |

If I attempt to update the project it will freak BOINC out In what way does it freak out? Grant Darwin NT |

Alinator - yeah, pretty much. This computer is a pretty important one when it isn't crunching, so I needed to get it back up and running ASAP. Grant - if I update the project, it will kinda "freeze" the boinc manager. The only options are to force-close BOINC or reboot the machine, and after either of those I am unable to connect to the BOINC client. The only solution at that point is to uninstall and reinstall the program. |

Sounds strange indeed. You could try turning HT off in the bios and see if that makes it more responsive. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Turning off HT didn't make any difference.. Anything to be done if the data folder is corrupt? Am I best to set to not get any more tasks, run out until I get all my work in, then start a new profile and merge the two? |

Basically you would uninstall boinc, move the data folder to desktop and then reinstall boinc. This will give you a clean data folder, but most likely also a new computer ID. |

Very odd. Do you run a 3rd party firewall or one of the many all in one security suites? Grant Darwin NT |

Grant, I run Avast, as do almost all of the other systems in my little farm.. and none of them are having trouble.. |

Well, it happened again - I removed the project and have started fresh, so we'll see what happens now.. |

Basically you would uninstall boinc, move the data folder to desktop and then reinstall boinc. This will give you a clean data folder, but most likely also a new computer ID. I wouldn't know why it would give a new hostID, unless you managed to destroy the client_state.xml file AND client_state_prev.xml file in the process. But other than that, you can easily move the data directory to anywhere and back and as long as it happens on the same hardware (same CPU, same GPU) and software (same operating system platform), you shouldn't have any trouble. I've just moved my data directory from P: back to C: and I didn't get a new hostID. So why should he? |

In a clean (newly created) data folder, there wouldn't be any client state file. Ah yes, I read it wrong. I assumed it meant moving the data directory to elsewhere and then just reinstalling BOINC pointing it to the new spot of the DD. But if you want a clean data directory, you can just as well delete the old one, or leave it into place and tell the BOINC installer to make a new one at any path different from the original one. |

I had been wondering about that too. I've done the transplant as is to a different MB technique before, and had it work initially. However, I always ended up reinstalling the OS clean eventually due to subtle oddities in system behavior. ;-) |
