Hello Everyone!

I thought I would try to upgrade the graphics card one of my crunching rigs, so I purchased an ASUS HD 7770 DirectCU graphics card as kind of an experiment. (I was running Nvidia prior.)

I put the card in, installed the drivers, and installed BOINC Manager and the Lunatics apps (being careful to select ATI options, and deselecting NVIDIA options). This was the first time Lunatics was being installed on this windows installation. BOINC was already present, but I upgraded to the newest version after seeing a notice.

I start up BOINC, and unfortunately have received an error that states "No usable gpus found". Followed by quite a few messages that read "app version refers to missing GPU type ATI".

I am kind of stuck right out of the gate. If anyone has some ideas I might be able to try, I would be very appreciative of the help!

This graphics card is 2x as fast as the old one, I hope to get it going!

Which OS did you use ?

If it is Win XP then the latest driver with OpenCL support would be Catalyst 12.1

Thanks for your response!

It is win XP 32 bit.

The drivers I installed were called "AMD VGA V9.0"

I'm not sure if that translate to being Catalyst. Just so I am clear, you are suggesting I need to find Catalyst 12.1 Drivers?

Those are the generic drivers that came with the video card I presume. The generic drivers nearly always lack OpenCL support.

You can find the Catalyst 12.1 drivers here.

Catalyst is not a driver. It is a package of several programs, one of which is the card driver.

You can get Catalyst 12.1 here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/12/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20XP%20-%20Professional/Home&rev=12.1#1

Thank you very much everyone for your help!

I am still having some trouble. Unfortunately, I can not be sure if it is human error, or computer error.

I uninstalled the previous drivers that I had, and then installed 12.1 from the kinds you were very kind to provide.

However, after a successful installation and a reboot, windows treats the new card as if it does not have any drivers installed. This perhaps goes without saying, but the BOINC errors are the same.

Have I missed an obvious piece to the puzzle here?

It may very well be that the older Catalyst 12.1 drivers don't support the HD 7770 cards.

[Edit] Yep, I found it: Catalyst 12.1 card support; your HD 7770 is not listed.

I think your safest option is to upgrade to Windows 7.

Your old operating system is going to have trouble
supporting your modern video card.

Edit It might be possible, but it's going to be an
ongoing headache with XP32.

Thanks very much everyone for the information.

I would consider myself "just getting started" with the idea of crunching, and I really appreciate this forum and its kind participants being such a great resource to noobs like me.

Guess I'll stick the old NVidia back in until I can either get win7 or a new rig entirely :)

Why don't you try the AMD card in your Duo CPU P8700, it's W7. If it's a laptop that would make sense, otherwise it might be worth a shot.

Good thought, but it is a laptop unfortunately.

That thing is so slow and inefficient I've actually just uninstalled BOINC from it entirely the other day, ha. (After letting it complete its work, of course!)

When you installed the driver, did the installer create a folder where actual driver software is stored on the hard drive?

If it did. Here is what I would do. Keep the Catalyst, we don't need it for the driver content, but we need it for other software that it provides. Now go to the Device Manager, get to your card and there should be a place where it let you look for the driver. Click the Update Driver, tell it to use the driver from the folder that I mentioned above.

Here is an example:

Please post your Boinc startup messages from the Event Log, the firsr 20 to 30 lines will do, it is possible that you're done a service installation, GPUs are never going to show when installed like that on recent Boincs.

AMD 7 series cards will not work with OpenCL in Windows XP. They will work in Linux/Ubuntu. Unless you're trying to do an EFI install of Ubuntu on a Mac, you shouldn't have any trouble installing Ubuntu. For the AMD 7 series cards and SETI, that's your choice. Either update to a newer Windows from XP, or install Ubuntu...

Did not think to check this thread yesterday, I figured that I was just out of luck trying to run that card on winXP.

I did not notice if the driver created a folder or not, I will check in the upcoming days.

As for a service install, I am unsure of what that means.

Thank you everyone for the additional suggestions, Just posting quickly to check in, I will have some time this week to give this another look.

Thanks for that information. I guess you've saved me some time (and frustration!).

Now... how to figure out how to get another win7 rig... :)
