I was donated a never used EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 with 2GB DDR3 PCI-E card that is spec'ed to have CUDA, but GPU-Z says it doesn't. In order to ask EVGA tech support, I must register the card first, but that requires a receipt and store name, neither of which I got with the card. The BIOS is 75.19.55.00.10 (P1310-0004). Computing is OpenCL and PhysX but no CUDA or DirectCompute. The driver is the latest WHQL (320.18) on this computer (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7022545). Does anyone have a helpful suggestion as to how to get CUDA on this card? Or is there another way to use it with BOINC? Or should I just use it as a paper weight now? gpu[/img] |

Where did you get the driver? You need driver from NVIDIA or EVGA, not from Microsoft/Windows (Microsoft deliberately removes certain parts from video drivers) Also it seems there is a new problem with NVIDIA driver 320.18: Scheduler Wait (you may need older driver) http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72056 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72079 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72077 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72083 But there is new post by Claggy: "The latest 320.49 drivers fix the 320.00/.14/.18 device memory allocation issue on mixed Nvidia/ATI hosts:" http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72056&postid=1384670#1384670 Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

The EVGA website link took me to the NVIDIA website to get the driver, which is from where I downloaded it. IF I can get CUDA in this card, or IF I can get an OpenGL client for it, I will need a proper driver - thanks for the tip. |

6/25/2013 12:40:24 PM | | Running as a daemon BOINC can't use CUDA/OpenCL if you've installed it as a service (daemon) under Windows Vista or higher. You'll have to uninstall BOINC and re-install it without selecting Protected Application Execution. |

Thanks for the heads-up. I understand this restriction, but I am not going to un/reinstall unless I can use the card. First I want to know it can be used, then if I can, I will do the necessary reconfigurations to use it. |

First I want to know it can be used, then if I can, I will do the necessary reconfigurations to use it. There is no obvious reason, as long as you have the proper Nvidia driver installed, that the card shouldn't work. It's not a terribly powerful card, but it should run one WU at a time faster than a comparable CPU unit. Of course, unless you un/reinstall BOINC after insuring a proper driver is in place, it's a sure thing that, under your present configuration, it WON'T work. |

I was working under a misconception. This is the first graphic card I have ever had since I am not a gamer or graphics user. GPU-Z reported that the card did not have CUDA, and I thought SETI clients were only available for CUDA. My error. I un/reinstalled the manager and - voila! - it found the card, reported it has CUDA and OpenCL and promptly put it to work. Thanks for your encouragement in getting me to try it. |

As it turns out, it was not usable because I didn't actually try it in a correct configuration since I was working under a misconception. See my reply above. |

This is the first graphic card I have ever had since I am not a gamer or graphics user. Then how did you see anything on your monitor? Braille? It's easy to get confused today in the computer market, but here goes: Another word for graphics card is video card. Neither means it can only do graphics or video. Most Operating Systems these days use graphics, Windows is one big graphical user interface enabling you to give commands to your computer. Everything you see on the screen in Windows are graphics. Not just the background, but also all the icons, the launch bar, the menus, everything. The videocard/graphics card translates what the OS sends to it into visuals you see on the monitor or TV screen. Meaning you don't have to be a gamer or graphics user to use a graphics card. All computers need a graphics card. Without one, your monitor will be black. The difference here is that since a couple of years calculations can be done on the graphics card, be it CUDA, CAL or OpenCL. This is done with a so called GPGPU, or General Purpose, Graphical Processing Unit. A GPU that can do intricate calculations at the same time as showing the graphics on a monitor. |

Simple: I just told the BIOS to use the integrated GPU on my i7 as my primary, and ignore the graphic/video add-in card. If (or perhaps I should say when) the BOINC clients begin using the integrated GPUs, then the projects will see a big increase in throughput. I know there is some work on getting this to happen. I have always purchased mainboards WITH graphics on board, so a separate graphics card was not needed (I build my own computers, too, except for my laptops). The first computer on which I worked was an IBM 650 which used vacuum tubes for logic, a drum for storage, and punched cards for input and output. I have been in this game a long time, but never had an interest in "graphics" per se. I remember when Windows first came out with their GUI on a monochrome monitor (ugly as sin, too). I still wouldn't have an add-in card except one was given to me and I decided to try to get it to work. |

GPU-Z shouldn't be trusted with regards to whether Cuda or OpenCL is available, better to use GPUCapsViewer, that will give the Cuda and OpenCL capabilities of a GPU rather than a simple tickbox: GPU Caps Viewer 1.18.1 Released Claggy |

Thanks for the pointer. I downloaded and ran it (portable - nice!), and it does give lots more information not only about the graphic card, but also about the integrated graphics in my CPUs. |

This seems to be the proper place to ask this,if not, please let me know where to go. I replaced my ATI card after the fan failed with a GeForce GTX 560 (the driver is 320.49). I expected the video card to be used to crunch data, but I still only have the for CPU processors doing the crunching even though I told Boinc to use the GPU. Shouldn't the crunching be done by both the CPUs and the GPU? If so, what am I doing wrong that causes the video card not to be used? |

(...) Shouldn't the crunching be done by both the CPUs and the GPU? If so, what am I doing wrong that causes the video card not to be used? You use anonymous platform for crunching, have you (re)installed the lunatics apps for the new GPU? Also: Have you selected GPU processing in your seti@home/BOINC preferences? Aloha, Uli |

And addendum to Ulrich's question, did you also uninstall the ATI drivers completely? |

I reinstalled the lunatics app for the cpu when I updated to the 7.0.64 BOINC app. Is there a separate app for the gpu? Yes, I have the preferences set to always use the GPU but it has never done anyting with the GPU. |

I uninstalled the ATI drivers before I changed out the video card. Thanks. |
