Hubble Finds Planet Orbiting Pair of Stars

Two's company, but three might not always be a crowd — at least in space.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and a trick of nature, have confirmed the existence of a planet orbiting two stars in the system OGLE-2007-BLG-349, located 8,000 light-years away towards the center of our galaxy.

The planet orbits roughly 300 million miles from the stellar duo, about the distance from the asteroid belt to our sun. It completes an orbit around both stars roughly every seven years. The two red dwarf stars are a mere 7 million miles apart, or 14 times the diameter of the moon's orbit around Earth.

Rains of Terror on Exoplanet HD 189733b

This Halloween, take a tour with NASA's Exoplanet Exploration site of some of the most terrifying and mind-blowing destinations in our galaxy. In this image, the nightmare world of HD 189733 b is the killer you never see coming. To the human eye, this far-off planet looks bright blue. But any space traveler confusing it with the friendly skies of Earth would be badly mistaken. The weather on this world is deadly. Its winds blow up to 5,400 mph (2 km/s) at seven times the speed of sound, whipping all would-be travelers in a sickening spiral around the planet. And getting caught in the rain on this planet is more than an inconvenience; it’s death by a thousand cuts. This scorching alien world possibly rains glass—sideways—in its howling winds. The cobalt blue color comes not from the reflection of a tropical ocean, as on Earth, but rather a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere containing high clouds laced with silicate particles.

Gas Giant?

Scientists Discover Exoplanet 5 Times the Earth’s Mass

A group of scientists has discovered an exoplanet five times the mass of the Earth and is orbiting around a red dwarf star.

Using data from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) and HARPS-N instruments, researchers have found an exoplanet candidate orbiting around an M-class red dwarf star called GJ 536, which is located about 32.7 light years from Earth, Universe Today reports.

Assuming the mass value -- 5.36 plus or minus 0.69 that of the Earth-- isn't too far off, it could be a rocky planet, rather than a small gaseous one. Unfortunately for the prospects of life on such a planet, it's not within its star's habitable zone.

Gaseous planets can have masses at least as low as that of Earth, so its difficult to say if this newly discovered planet is one, or the other.

Astronomers discover a dense 'hot Jupiter' exoplanet orbiting a sun-like star

(Phys.org)—Astronomers have detected a so-called "hot Jupiter" exoplanet transiting a distant sun-like star located some 1,800 light years from the Earth. The newly discovered planet, designated EPIC 220504338b, was found using NASA's prolonged Kepler mission known as K2. The findings are presented in a paper published Nov. 23 on arXiv.org.

EPIC 220504338b was first spotted by K2 as a planetary candidate during the spacecraft's Campaign 8 in mid-2016. To confirm it as a planet, a team of researchers led by Nestor Espinoza of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile conducted follow-up observations using ESO's Fibre-fed, Extended Range, Échelle Spectrograph (FEROS) at La Silla Observatory in Chile. FEROS observational campaign was carried out in August and November 2016.

Not exactly what they've been looking for.

First exoplanet weather report shows clouds of ruby and sapphire

It’s cloudy with a chance of gemstones. A super-sized planet 1000 light years from Earth has clouds that may contain the building blocks of rubies and sapphires, according to the first exoplanet meteorology report.

The planets in our solar system experience a wide variety of weather, from Jupiter’s famous Great Red Spot through Mars’s dust devils to Saturn’s hexagonal north polar storm. But planets around other stars are too distant for us to directly discern their short-term weather, such as changes in clouds or wind.

Gas Giant. Like the weather report.

Not a habitable planet.

Astronomers just discovered a ‘Hot Jupiter,’ and it’s absolutely massive

Jupiter is the undisputed big dog in our solar system. It’s so huge that even if you took all the other planets in our solar system and combined them, Jupiter would still be two-and-a-half times bigger than that. So when astronomers announce that they’ve discovered a planet that’s a whopping 66 percent more massive than Jupiter, you have an idea of just how huge that is. But what’s particularly interesting about the newly-discovered alien world named “TAP 26 b” is that it’s not a frigid ball of gas like our Jupiter; it’s boiling hot.

NASA: Red dwarf habitable zones may not be so habitable

Feb. 8 (UPI) -- New research by NASA scientists suggests the so-called habitable zone surrounding red dwarf stars may not be as habitable as previously thought.

The habitable zone is the area surrounding a star in which liquid water can exist on an orbiting exoplanet, thus presenting the possibility for life. The zone's dimensions are defined by the size and strength of the star. An exoplanet in the habitable zone is far enough from its sun that water isn't boiled away, but close enough that it isn't perpetually frozen.

Lot's of red dwarf 's out in the universe.

An interesting supposition , but then we have the recent discovery of a terrestrial, habitable zone planet with a thick, un-eroded atmosphere orbiting very closely a red dwarf star, Gliese 1132.

Astronomers find SIXTY new planets orbiting stars near our solar system - and say some 'could be like Earth'

In the hunt for life outside Earth, researchers have discovered 60 new planets orbiting stars near our solar system.

Among the new planets is a hot 'super-Earth', called Gliese 411b, which has a rocky surface and is located in the fourth nearest star system to the sun.

Researchers say that the planet demonstrates that 'virtually all' the nearest stars to the sun have planets orbiting them, and some of these 'could be like Earth.'

'could be like Earth.'

This statement needs much further explanation as to why and to what degree they could be like Earth.

Streaming now from NASA. This one isn't working for me for some reason (probably blocked at work) so watching on CTV. Dunno if that works outside Canada.

Summary: There are seven earth-sized planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1 39.1 LY away and three of them are in the liquid-water habitable zone.

NASA says that starting from February 24 they won't use any more Flash in their broadcasts but HTML 5. I don't know if this has any consequence on me. I am using Linux and Flash on Firefox, but I have also a Windows 10 PC, also with Firefox. I use it mostly for BOINC work and watching Swiss TV, which is not visible in Italy. But they have good concerts on their radio.

Wow, what a crazy system that I've never imagined before. All 7 planets orbit that dwarf star at a much closer radius than Mercury is from the Sun, but all of them are near the size of earth. Their orbits last from like <2 days to a few weeks. Their orbits are also irregular because the planets are so close to each other and they tug at each other. When the planets are near each other, some of them would appear in the sky as how the Moon looks to us. It might be possible that the star blasted the atmosphere or water off the surface of the planets when the star was younger and more active, since the planets are so close to the star. I think they said some of the planets are tidally locked so maybe those planets would be less habitable.

Atmosphere found around Earth-like planet GJ 1132b

Scientists say they have detected an atmosphere around an Earth-like planet for the first time.

They have studied a world known as GJ 1132b, which is 1.4-times the size of our planet and lies 39 light years away.

Their observations suggest that the "super-Earth" is cloaked in a thick layer of gasses that are either water or methane or a mixture of both.
