Is he dead? I didn't see anything on that on the major news sources. I'd wished that Obama would visit him and just have the cameras turned off. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

If I were seriously ill, the LAST thing I'd want is a visit from a politician and their entourage. Stay away, let me either get well or die in peace. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Apparently he's improving...wow. 94 years old and still fighting. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/28/winnie-mandela-nelson-mandela-health_n_3516588.html?utm_hp_ref=world&ir=World |

It looks like he is going down, on life support again. |

Still hanging on in there. His family are having a rather undignified squabble - I reckon if he was well enough he would a few of their heads together. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

As the resident South African who lurks on this forum, thanks for all the kind words and expressions of concern for our former president Nelson Mandela. The conspiracy theorists are, of course, having a field day, and the undignified family squabble has been headline news over here for the past week or so. As someone said, the Mandelas are making the Kardashians look like a class act! I've seen Mandela in the flesh twice. The first time was at the Rugby World Cup Final in June 1995, when he handed the Rugby World Cup to the victorious Springbok captain, Francois Pienaar. Rugby was considered the sport of the oppressor in apartheid South Africa, and when Mandela appeared on the field wearing the captain's No. 6 rugby jersey, it represented a huge symbolic step in the reconciliation that South Africa was undergoing at the time. That saga became the story-line for Clint Eastwood's 2009 movie, Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Just a few months later, in February 1996, South Africa's soccer team won the African Cup of Nations, and once again I was there to witness Mandela hand the trophy to captain Neil Tovey. Afterwards, Mandela walked across the field to where the crowds were and spent several minutes right below us, waving to the crowd. Those were magic moments that united a once-divided nation. |

My wife and I both think that Mandela wanted what Gandhi wanted, but he got more. The whole world is watching and praying. |

Thank you John. If ever I needed to have a reason for placing a person on my "bucket list of must meets" you have explained why Nelson Mandela is on mine. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |
