Dear SETI@home number crunchers, I'm a long time SETI@home user (registered 7 Sep 1999) and still very interested in the SETI@home project. I have created a free, new BOINC add-on software especially for SETI@home users which is called SETIspirit which I would like to share. About SETIspirit: SETIspirit is free add-on tool for SETI@home users which provides useful information about the tasks, the SETI@home project status, workunits and credits. It also includes graphical statistic charts and a detailed sky map. SETIspirit presents a complete overview about the BOINC workunits, e. g. the number of workunits available/completed as well as the overall workunit status (downloading, ready to run, running, wu progress, uploading, ready to report). SETIspirit shows the user and host credits and the most recent project server states (download and upload server, scheduler service). The statistic module shows the calculated workunits in week-, month- or year charts. The SETIspirit sky map shows the position where the workunit is recorded and much more details (report deadline, recorded on/at, wu type, slot, cpu time, time left) as well as the current results of the workunit analysis (spikes, gaussians, pulses and triplets found). The sky map shows all known 88 constellations with constellations shapes and deep sky photographies. The database (db) offers some interesting facts about the constellations. NEW: the latest SETIspirit release (v1.0.5) now supports non-standard boinc installations. I have launched a website for SETIspirit at... http://www.setispirit.de For more impressions please see the screenshot gallery here. Your feedback is always welcome. Feel free to contact me at info@setispirit.de. Thx! Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Thanks Dirk ! Thank you Thomas, I'm happy to hear that you like my SETIspirit Add-on! To your Question: as long as the boinc logfile <stdoutdae.txt> (located in the boinc data directory) isn't deleted, SETIspirit won't reset the WU's if a new version of the BOINC Manager is installed (upgraded). SETIspirit now works for me longer than 6 months and I never lost WU statistics even if I have installed a newer version of the BOINC Manager. If you have other experiences, please contact me and I will try to help :-) Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Starting playing with this last week and look like a good tool. So far I have only put this on one of my systems. It is showing mostly blank data under project stats. See here. Looking at the image I think maybe the average numbers are to high as well for that host. I with my RAC was 3300000. :) SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Would be friendly, in announcements of applications, to say what operating system(s) they apply to. There being more than one operating system and all. |

To your Question: Thanks Dirk :) It's clear now. I will send you by MP the post which my Network Admin will publish on the IT forum of the {BDC} about SETIspirit to present it to the members of my team (in july - it will be in french but it'll still give an overview). |

Why there are 'password-protected files' in the installer? What they contain? Since DrWeb reports 'BACKDOOR.Trojan': https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/eb9ebfea0029558cdfce17f6122e46c91d88861e7da31687fabf3edf2b7046eb/analysis/ ... you may want to report 'False detection' to them here: https://vms.drweb.com/sendvirus/?lng=en  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

This is a false detection, of course. The first file is a small text file which includes the end credits text (I don't want that anyone can change it) and the second file is the end credits soundtrack (which is licensed). If you don't trust it, send me an private e-mail and I will return the password for de-cryption to verify it (but you have to insure that you don't distribute the soundtrack and password). Thx. After you explained it I take your word for it, no need for me to test. Other questions: 1) Where is the file stdoutdae.archiv created? ("SETIspirit is automatically archiving the stdoutdae.old file by appending it to stdoutdae.archiv and deleting the stdoutdae.old file") I have 13 copies (2010-2013, 48 MB) of stdoutdae.old files in a .rar (I archive them manually) If I decide to install SETIspirit I may concatenate them in stdoutdae.archiv If I put this 48 MB big stdoutdae.archiv file in the right place will this have any effect? (I don't know what info SETIspirit extracts from stdoutdae.*) - It will be good to document somewhere which BOINC files SETIspirit reads, e.g.: stdoutdae.* client_state.xml job_log_setiathome.berkeley.edu.txt statistics_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml ... 2) One user (Igogo - the author of 'BOINC Monitor' Gadget (which in .exe form contains/downloads/installs adware)) claims that: "Doesn't work for me. After installing I lost ALL my GPU WUs (computation error). Communication deferred for 24hrs" "I don't know what wrong in SETIspirit but after install it my BOINC client works wrong. No run GPU tasks (computation error). No run V7 - no files. I must remove BOINC and install it again." http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=72062&postid=1383826#1383826 The only his Computer with GPU is: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (2047MB) driver: 320.18 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6753440 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=6753440&offset=0&show_names=0&state=6&appid= The reason for his crashed tasks looks completely different (not SETIspirit related, maybe memory corruption or similar temporary glitch) but: are you sure that when SETIspirit opens any BOINC files it (SETIspirit) doesn't lock them? (e.g. if some flag in some call is not set correctly) His 'AstroPulse v6 Anonymous platform (CPU)' tasks show: "ERROR: both checkpoint files are damaged, aborting task" http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=3048926392 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=3048932537 Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Thanks for your response, here are my remarks... 0) After you explained it I take your word for it, no need for me to test. Thanks, you can trust me. Other questions: 1) Where is the file stdoutdae.archiv created? C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Roaming\SETIspirit\stdoutdae.archiv 2) I have 13 copies (2010-2013, 48 MB) of stdoutdae.old files in a .rar (I archive them manually) If I decide to install SETIspirit I may concatenate them in stdoutdae.archiv If I put this 48 MB big stdoutdae.archiv file in the right place will this have any effect? Yes, SETIspirit will be able to include the complete wu statistics for your host. Keep in mind that SETIspirit will use more RAM for that. The Database Maintenance Tool is able to downsize the SETIspirit archiv logs, which will result in a faster application startup time and a lower memory usage (usefull after a long time of operating). This tool will be available later on my homepage. 3) I don't know what info SETIspirit extracts from stdoutdae The complete wu statistics (week, month and year), wu's requested/received/reported 4) It will be good to document somewhere which BOINC files SETIspirit reads Yes you are right, but at this time I don't have it documented. 5) One user (Igogo - the author of 'BOINC Monitor' Gadget (which in .exe form contains/downloads/installs adware)) claims that: "Doesn't work for me. After installing I lost ALL my GPU WUs (computation error). Communication deferred for 24hrs" The reason for his crashed tasks looks completely different (not SETIspirit related, maybe memory corruption or similar temporary glitch) You are right, this problem is not caused by SETIspirit. 6) but: are you sure that when SETIspirit opens any BOINC files it (SETIspirit) doesn't lock them? (e.g. if some flag in some call is not set correctly) Yes, I'm sure. Why? Read it here... a) SETIspirit is opening any files read-only and is doing this ALWAYS without locking (non exclusive access only) b) SETIspirit has included error rountines, which will immediatelly abort the programm code if an error has occurred c) SETIspirit is running over 6 months 24x7 on all my machines without problems (even on my fasted host with cpu and gpu crunching with 9 tasks a time) Best Regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

SETIspirit v1.06. is released now The "project run time" and "current uptime" issue * is fixed now. The missing or wrong <user id> issue ** is also fixed now. Â Â * occurred on systems with different date formats ** occurred on systems with multiple BOINC projects As a result of this bugs the SETIspirit debug logfile... C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Roaming\SETIspirit\debug.log is may be grown into a large file. You can safely delete the debug file from your harddisk (please quit SETIspirit first), it will be automatically re-created the next time SETIspirit starts. Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Thanks for the 1.06 update. Has anyone else had an issue when selecting workunits > statistics? At the moment I get about 800 "6/27/2013 11:18:47 AM - frmStatistics.Form_Load(): 9 Subscript out of range SETIspirit" in the debug log per second if I select it. Also I get nothing listed when selecting workunits > wu's reported. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Thanks for the 1.06 update. Dear HAL9000, I have analyzed the log file you send me and it seems that your BOINC data directory isn't set right. So as I wrote to you by e-mail could you please the check your BOINC data directory? Is it really "D:\Download\BOINC" ??? This directory must include the latest stdoutdae.txt file of your boinc client. This is the case, if you hit the "messages" command button of SETIspirit and you can see the latest BOINC events in the messages form. Is this the case? If the BOINC data directory doesn't match, exit SETIspirit, delete the SETIspirit.ini file * and start SETIspirit again to point to the right BOINC data directory location. * C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Roaming\SETIspirit\SETIspirit.ini It would be nice to hear from you again. Thanks. Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Thanks for the 1.06 update. Yes on that machine D:\Download\BOINC is the correct path for both data & program. http://www.hal6000.com/seti/images/boinc_folder.png http://www.hal6000.com/seti/images/stdoutdae.png It is very non-standard I know. In my job as a software test engineer I do many non standard things. I use such a configuration as I reimage my computers often. So BOINC is contained on its own place each time & doesn't rely on anything when I start it from a clean OS. This is an example of why I thought the wu's reported screen was odd. http://www.hal6000.com/seti/images/ss_106_reported.png This might be a result of the log flags I have set in my cc_config.xml. Perhaps I have turned off a message you are looking to find? These are the settings I use. <cc_config> <log_flags> <task>0</task> <file_xfer>0</file_xfer> <sched_ops>1</sched_ops> <coproc_debug>0</coproc_debug> <cpu_sched>0</cpu_sched> <cpu_sched_debug>0</cpu_sched_debug> <dcf_debug>0</dcf_debug> <sched_op_debug>0</sched_op_debug> <state_debug>0</state_debug> <http_debug>0</http_debug> <http_xfer_debug>0</http_xfer_debug> </log_flags> </cc_config> SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Thanks for your reply. It is very difficult to write a program which analyzes logfiles from a third party program if many default settings differ. SETIspirit also can't find the needed details in your log file, if you turned off the logging. I think at least the <file_xfer>0</file_xfer> logging must be turned on, maybe you need to turn on more settings. Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Thanks for your reply. If it wasn't for users then the software would be perfect! :) Finding issues like this is a good thing for a FAQ or "known issues" document. I will enable file_xfer. The fastest wu is 3 hours form completing. So I will leave work before it is complete.
