Cheaper and Quicker

I know it's only an interim report, with the full report due Summer 2015, but there's an old saying "Buy Cheap, Buy Twice".

I hope that there is some official within the department that will realise this & not accept the easiest way out.

The actual construction costs might be lower, but with all those NIMBYs in the home counties queing up for compensation I very much doubt that the final bill would anything but significantly higher.

Exactly & with all these new aircraft like the Boeing 787's & Airbus A350's & getting larger, a 4th runway will definitely be required a lot sooner rather than later. Add up the costs then, it'll be proven a lot cheaper to go for 4 now.

And you are sure there aren't as many NIMBY's at any other site?

Balls to the walls, I'll lay odds that had been me, it would've been bye bye HGV & 9 points!

Balls fined for going through red light district

"He was fined £60 and given three penalty points in April 2010 after being caught during a late-night drive between Yorkshire and London. However, a spokesman said that the points were never applied."

Damned shame I wasn't doing a late night London run, "Sorry officer, didn't have time to hit the brakes - anyway, he was only a politician. One less wouldn't make a difference"

Now this is interesting.....

An independent England?

Could we see independent passports? With Britain dead, will we continue to see mass immigration? According to EU rules, we would need to reapply for EU membership. Would the three nations vote to enter with what is now known?

The Right Place for them!

No wonder "shitstorm" has entered the German dictionary. We do tend to export only the best.

Having done an exhibition at Earls Court I can honestly say it is a grade one pain in the nether region to exhibit at. For exhibitors with anything larger than a box of tissues road access is a pain, parking is a pain, general access is a pain, floor loading is a pain, oh and then there's the curfew...
NEC and Wembley are far better in those respects.
As a visitor you are faced with coming in on the underground or paying really stupid parking fees.
The place has served its purpose, let it die in grace.

Never mind all that, what about this?

British Rail?

I believe we covered this on your Union thread. Still, I'll give the same answer again....

"Unbeknown to most passengers, one portion of our railway, the East Coast mainline, is still run by a publicly-owned company, Directly Operated Railways, which picked up the pieces after its two private sector predecessors walked off the job.

Recent calculations by the Office of Rail Regulation revealed how the public money that helps maintain the rail tracks or directly supports rail services splits between the train companies and showed that DOR receives less subsidy than any other rail franchise operator. DOR's success is a glaring embarrassment for the Government, who now intend to privatise it post-haste WHY?, even though that will increase costs to the taxpayer. "

...because no one in government has actually stopped to think, "Why" for it
wasn't made part of their script to stop once in a while and actually question
their own actions. Stopping and questioning your actions may undermine someone
higher up the chain hence make them look incompetent if it's really their
actions that your questioning. Take HS2, the whole world and it's mother knows
HS2 is a looser but to stop now and question it's validity will end up
undermining some very top government officials including THE PRIME MINISTER.
Yes, government bodies don't question their actions for as far as they are
concerned they are always right in all that they do and if having to call
black is really white then they will do so to that end...and do so because
it's safe and in the end you don't risk undermining anyone of importance....
....No wonder the West is going west!!

The question I ask about not building HS2 or whatever, is can London and to a certain extent the SE survive without it.

Just about every company or organisation I worked for, and it was quite a few, have all migrated towards London or the SE. It just doesn't make business sense to be more than an hour out of London any more.

And with every 1,000 bodies that moves to London there has to be an increase in schools, shops and services and a lot of the people who work in these are already saying London is too expensive.

The CBI do not support this HS2 project so industry clearly sees no benefits
coming from it. At best I see workers, some depending on cost of fares, now
being able to move away from the South East & London then use this HS2 to commute
back in to work here. I don't see HS2 being the stepping stone that permits
business's to see Birmingham & Manchester as a now ideal location to set up in.
The loss of business in those regions has nothing to do with poor transportation
but all to do with loss of business to the worlds economies due purely to they
being more efficient and producing at lower costs than we can. The only
industry that will benefit from HS2 are those of the service sector, a sector
that tends purely just to employ people hence do not mass-produce a product that can
be sold world wide. It's the latter that the third world has become very good
at, producing marketable products. Hence their rise in this world leading to
the slow decline of the West. HS2 will not stop our decline, what will though is
if we start to manufacture on a large scale again, here HS2 has no input at all.

There is no loss of Business. Production costs of goods in the Far East are traditionally lower than in the West, and always have been. HS2 has got nothing to do with it, neither has the Service sector either.

No loss of business?...what's happend to our cotton mills, what's happened to
our steel mills, what's happened to our heavy engineering, who's making our
planes and trains?...are you sure you really meant what you said above???
Will HS2 bring all this lost industry back to the UK again?

Where is the projected growth in GDP going to come from if HS2 goes ahead.
I tell you, HS2 will not boost UK GDP it will only redistribute it from the
South of the UK up towards the North, at best if lucky. To this end how will
HS2 pay for itself....the fact is it will not and can not recover it's costs
other than through passenger revenues. This recovery will take until the end
of this century at best, at worst will never. Who will travel on these HS2
trains?...office wallers, those from the service sector, people wishing to
go to Birmingham or Manchester for a holiday (I'm having a laugh) well, I
did not start this joke off....politicians did that, I'm just adding another
punch line to it. Chris, can you justify HS2 if so tell us how and why.

The CBI did support HS2 on previous costings, but now says it said it would back a review of the scheme as the cost spirals higher. They are not unhappy with the principle of it, just how much it will cost. CBI-HS2

So you agree with me then that the CBI are against it...naturally because of the
cost which is what we have been banging the drum over. Once the government
starts having to pay higher interest rates on it's loans, and they will have too
within the next two years, this project will get dropped like a lead balloon.
