Already refilled the water buckets, will set a soaker hose near the patio to help keep the kitties comfortable before I leave for Bingo.

Way cool, Dave.

Way cool.

I was on a train only once, in my youth.
Steam locomotive, as I recall.
The surge of power every breath it took astounded me.

Here is something that might astound you........

Mark, Mark, Mark. Yes, it's nice to listen to a steam engine work, but it's so much better to be there, to see it, to breathe the coal smoke. (Not so much the oil smoke, but UP has a good reason for using oil in its engines. Coal cinders tend to start grass fires in the arid west.) Even diesel exhaust somehow smells better from a train than from a truck or bus. And yes, to feel the surges; more than once, riding steam excursions, I have felt that, especially when we were moving slowly, trying to just move a few more car lengths, applying power without releasing the brakes. You feel the car surge and hear the single chuff every couple of seconds. I miss that feeling.

Get yourself up to Duluth when North Shore Scenic Railroad is running SOO 2719 (Fridays and Saturdays, August 16 to September 14). Keep an eye open for Milwaukee 261 to run a trip somewhere. Ditto for SOO 1003, based in Hartford, WI (I like this engine; an organization I belong to ran a pair of excursions with it on September 22 and 23, 2001, but our ticket sales pretty much stopped cold a week and a half earlier). Donate to Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom so they can get C&NW 1385 running again. Illinois Railway Museum in Union is working hard on getting Frisco 1630 back together and running again.

A rare weekend post for me.

Got a call today during lunch-my 75 year old Mom went in for Emerg surgery last night @ 2am. She's out & stable but it was bad. She had a Peptic Ulcer that perforated her bowel. They drained 3/4 of a gallon of infected fluid from her belly.

She's already dealing with a weakened immune system due to Myasthenia Gravis treatment so we can't see her until Tuesday at the earliest.

Serious prayers needed for the next few days as she's in a very compromised position. Also for my 85 yr old father who is just exhausted.

All this after Izzy on 6/9, now Suz's Aunt (who survived an aneurysm a month ago) passed Saturday morning & I attended a friend's funeral Friday before work.

Feel like we have a dark cloud hanging over us...
