Message 1379357 - Posted: 10 Jun 2013, 14:35:13 UTC

I was trying to enable GPU optimized apps so I removed BOINC, re-booted and re-installed BOINC 7.0.64 and disabled the service install. After doing that when I try to launch BOINCmgr after installing without a service, the BOINCmgr GUI gets stuck in "connecting to localhost" for a long period and after a few minutes I get a popup window with
"BOINC Manager - Unexpected Exit
The BOINC Client has exited unexpectedly 3 times within the last 3 minutes. Would you like to restart it again?"

If I reinstall BOINC as a service the CPU apps work fine but it will not start the GPU applications. If I use BOINCmgr on the failing node to connect to a different node the GUI functions fine.

Any ideas what I might have done wrong on this node? I followed the same steps on 3 others and they are running the GPU apps fine. All are running Windows 7 SP1, BOINC 7.0.64, and the Lunatics installer v0.41.

Try uninstalling and going in to the registry and removing all mention of boinc then try installing again, worth a shot. Im sure someone will be along with a better idea at some point!

Thanks, I have already tried using regedit to remove anything that had "BOINC" or "Space Science" after unistalling the services configuration.

Have you tried renaming the Boinc folder and the hidden data folder after you'd uninstalled Boinc? And then reinstalling, there might be some messed up files in there, I say this so that you'll be starting from fresh folders.

Do you use any 'special' Firewall?

I removed all directories for BOINC in "Program Files", and ProgramData, after uninstalling the service and cleaning the registry.

All machines are running Windows Firewall and McAfee Enterprise anti-Virus product.

I can not find any differences between the machines that work and the one that fails.

I see it launch "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" when I start BOINCmgr with the options "C:\Program Files\BOINC\\boinc.exe" --redirectio --launched_by_manager.

Is there a way to launch this from a DOS box to get debugging output?

when you start from a Command prompt with neither -redirectio nor -detach_console you effetively get the event log output into the command prompt window.

from boinc.exe -help

--redirectio redirect stdout and stderr to log files

I don't think there is extra debugging output beyond that, but you could try.

i.e. just C:\Program Files\BOINC\\boinc.exe in a command prompt

err

that launch has an extra \ in the path - maybe check the other machines if that's normal?

Yes the parameters for boinc.exe are identical on one of the nodes that is working.

Running from a cmd window did not yield any addition info.

Can you try (test) on the problem machine to switch OFF both Windows Firewall and McAfee anti-Virus
just to see will be any difference.

So did you get it working? You have six hosts that have an ATI GPU and match the other description. It's a bit hard to tell the right host.

If not:

It looks like BOINC is crashing in GPU detection. There is a change in ATI CAL/OpenCL detection in 7.1.x that for some reason didn't make it into 7.0.6x so you could try that version.

...when I start BOINCmgr with the options "C:\Program Files\BOINC\\boinc.exe" --redirectio --launched_by_manager.

You don't start BOINC Manager by starting boinc.exe --redirectio --launched_by_manager, then you only start the client and do so in a command line window.

Adding the --launched_by_manager attribute does do anything here. This attribute is only used by the Mac on OS X and does two things:
1. the client checks if the manager is still running, and exits if not.
2. it includes the size of the manager in the disk spaced used by BOINC.

I could not get McAfee removed so I wiped the system and re-installed the OS from the OEM partition. After I re-installed and I loaded the ATI optimized tasks with Lunatics v0.41 I reproduced the problem with windows firewall disabled and no McAfee installed. Running the stock apps worked fine but when I enabled the ATI optimized apps BOINCmgr started having problems again. There were a lot of messages about recent versions of ATI Catalyst not working correctly so I was trying to stay with version 11.12 of Catalyst. I found a post that someone had success with Catalyst v13.4 so I am trying to upgrade to that version.

I did not see that 7.0.64 was not the latest version so I will try downloading an updated version.

These nodes are accessed remotely using MSFT RDP (mstsc.exe) will that cause the GPU applications to crash?

@mikeej42

To remote access your hosts and avoid crash your GPU work, you could use a program like Teamviewer or Logmein (if you don´t want to be worry about the routers configurations or paid for the use - they are not free for comercial use) or a VNC for example (if you can program you router to send the right port to the right host, something hard to do when you have a lot of hosts as you have). I use thighVNC because is free and produces a low overhead to the host but basicaly any VNC does the same work. Of course there are a lot of others programs that makes the same job, i just point someones. The only thing thas is shure you must avoid the use of the MS RDP if you have a host with GPU, it always crash your video drivers due the way MS choose to load the video drivers after WIN 7. Why? Because you can't install Boinc as a service if you have a GPU after WIN7 (or vista i´m not sure) as we do with the old XT.
