Because we're drawing down troops in Afghanistan, the Marines at Camp Leatherneck are doing away with their *hot* midnight meal. They'll still have MREs.

I never had access to a hot midnight meal when I was in Iraq.

They'll get over it.

There are several other things the current regime is hitting the U.S. Military with I'd complain about more than this. But everybody in the U.S. Military takes their oath seriously.

My son-in-law gave me a few MRE's which I wasn't thrilled with but they were hot. I still like hot off the stove. Oh I had many meals out in the cold let me tell you but a hot meal you couldn't beat.

“Any time a dining hall meal is eliminated it will be replaced from a plentiful stock of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat — or any one of several creative acronyms our Marines have come up with.)”

Yep! Military Personnel the world over can answer that one. :)

After my 8 yeras in the USAF. I did a hitch in the US army reserve as a combat engineer. One weekend we did training and Fort Drum NY in october. It was a 40 degree F. cold rainy day. As my company made an over watch 3 of us went on a recon. We were soaked to the bone and cold. And yes we had ponchos on, Those things are useless. When we got back to the company they were getting ready to move out so we had about 10 minutes to eat. I grabbed a can of C-rations from 1968 ( this was in 1983 ) opened the lid and stuck in a bed of coals until I saw the grease start boiling. While waiting I put on a dry pair of wool socks.

Let me tell you that can of pork slices tatsed so good. My warm belly and dry warm socks felt awesome.
After the exercise evryone was anxiuos to hit the hot showers, and then hit the rack. So I guess you could say we had 3 hots an a cot.

Soldiers like to bitch. Its when they stop is when youd better take heed.

Now now now, that is an MCI. MCI's weren't made until after the Korean war was over.

This is a real C-Ration

Circa WWII.

Despite the new name, the MCI was still popularly referred to by the troops as "C-Rations" (or "Charlie rats"), which it resembled in nearly all respects.

We all know USMC only got the Navy's hand-me-downs. LOL

Your C rats looks like what I knew as K rats when I was a kid. And pemmican bars too.

Gawd is thread stirring up some memories. LOL

It is too bad the troops are losing a hot meal but it is not the end of the world for them. Been there done that.

It was December 1983 and we were on a bivouac for some training in Ft McClellan Alabama. We were given C-rats produced in september of 1968. It was surprising how well the pork meals held up after all that time. The next field duty saw us getting the new MRE which were something to behold. Freeze dried meat that never reconsitituted, RETCH!
