Message 1375597 - Posted: 2 Jun 2013, 21:14:37 UTC - in response to Message 1375593.

Mine has taken a dive. My question is though where is the best place to find out about optimizing a GPU. I have an Nvidia GTX550Ti. It only does one work unit at a time. I am running a quad core with 3 cores on Seti and the GPU. Any help greatly appreciated. Thx.

Here is a app_config.xml file to put into your project dir.

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.04</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

It will run 2 GPU WU's at a time , if you want to run 3 , just change the 0.5 to a 0.33 and save.

Copy the above and save it in notepad as " all files " , name it app_config.xml

Just a reminder, don't try to run 3 WU at a time for now.

As at this morning, since implementing v7, RAC has moved accordingly:

Smallpox has dropped from 89.3k to 76k (down 14.9%) and is still falling
Gonorrhea has dropped from 58.3k to 48.8k (down 16.3%) and is still falling
Scurvy has dropped from 72k to 61.5k (down 14.6%) and is still falling

I'm frustrated, I'm pissed off, and I'm done

Good luck to everyone on the project, I appreciate all the help and advice you've provided through the years. This v7 fiasco, and it is a huge fiasco, is a wake up call that it's time to actually do something useful with my PC, and save some electricity/money in the process.

I hope you guys and gals find something out there

Sorry to hear about your frustration, but to be honest, for such a big change I would not call it a fiasco at all.

You are running anonymous platform, so you are not getting the new tasks.
If you relax a bit, folks here could tell you how to fix that.
Or, you could wait a few days more, and hopefully the new Lunatics installer may be available for you to update your optimized apps and continue from there.

Your past participation is appreciated. Please feel free to ask for help here if you so desire it.

would you like to play a game?

yes gaming is a useful purpose for a pc. time for the mac dig, mac's are just for fun but can't play games (flash based games don't count).

Crashing rapidly! Lost 20K of RAC so far. If this lasts, scores may not justify the power usage

Everyone is in the same boat so what has it got to do with your power usage?

If you are after points you might as well go to 1 of those other projects that have always offered a much higher amount of them.

Cheers.

Whilst RAC is going down, it is also a lag indicator. If you look at BOINC Stats you will see the day to day position that you are in.

In my case, daily credit has dropped from circa 210k to circa 94k.

This time last week I had an RAC of around 54k and was 178th by user. Today my RAC is around 50K but I am 168th. The RAC drop seems to be affecting everyone, so I suggest anyone who only crunches for high RAC to crunch somewhere else.

Based on Boinc Stats, your credits were sitting around 55k-58k per day. Since migrating to v7, credits for work done yesterday dropped to 41.4k for the day, more than a 25% reduction compared to previous history.

lets say after crunching for ten years I were to quit today, it shouldn't take someone 10 years with 5 times faster hardware and code to surpass my total score.

The score for the equivalent computational work done needs to remain the same.

i don't give a rats behind about what other Boinc projects give, as do most others; i either crunch seti or nothing. So stop with the "go another project" attitude if you don't like the reduced credit.

But my position has risen, so it is an across the board thing. Also my number 3 cruncher has had no GPU tasks since Friday due to me making a mistake in the app_info.

I crunch SETI for science not numbers, the only thing I use credit for is to see how my machines preform against each other, not anyone else.

If you don't like what is happening I suggest you e-mail D Anderson or Eric and complain.

Whatever happens even if they stopped giving out credit tomorrow and just recorded the number of WU's completed, would make no difference to me, been here almost since the start.

The only thing that matters is that we are doing valid work for the project, hopefully V7 will ensure we are!

Is there a thread or a sticky in the Seti@home Science forum that explains
the difference between V7 and V6 and how Boinc and credit granting might be affected?
Most crunchers aren't competing with others but rather with themselves.
We can all look at Statistics and see what hardware it takes to get a certain RAC.
RAC is a measure of how well I tend my crunchers and how much science they're doing.
If my RAC drops are my crunchers doing less science?
Do I have a Virus?
Is my hardware showing signs of impending failure?

All crunchers are showing signs of lower credits per unit time crunching.
Does this mean V7 is doing less science or is this a transition artifact peculiar to Boinc?

I'm in it for the stats and Bernie Vine is not going to catch me even though he's 11 places above me in RAC... for the moment.

If true, slightly sad. If you like I will switch a couple of machines off for a few days so you can overtake me a bit quicker.

Dr. K posted last week that he'd be explaining the differences in v7 processing shortly, but clearly has been very busy with rollout issues. I'm sure he'll get to it when he is able.

As to how credit is calculated, you can read more than you ever wanted to know about that here

All the "new" programs need time to build up a "history" before credits settle in. And RAC always drops like a stone during these times, and during outages. It takes several times longer to regain "lost" RAC than it does to lose it in the first place.

AAAaahhhhhh!

SO much better.

A huge thank you to Joe (Josef W. Segur) for the optimised CPU apps, to Raistmer (with additional input from Urs Echternacht) for OpenCL apps and to Jason (jason_gee) for CUDA apps.
Also alpha testers Claggy, arkayn and Mike.
And BilBg for beta-testing.
And William who I am pretty sure wrote the installer[s].

Three cheers and free beers to these gentlemen who have done the heavy lifting [again] for we mere mortals.

If you haven't guessed yet, my RAC is no longer in freefall.
