Message 1383175 - Posted: 20 Jun 2013, 20:11:48 UTC - in response to Message 1383169.

You've been here since March 8, 2002, which means you've seen the transition of SETI@home software releases from v5.x to v6.x to v6 "Multibeam"... all of which were automatically downloaded to your machine when they were released.

So why do you suddenly have a problem with it now?

I disagree.....been here 11 years and never have been informed any NEW VERSIONS will automatically be installed on my system without my permission. I understand the file "updates". A new version should be my choice, especially when it "bogs down" peoples systems farther....like this was is doing.

This is not something you can simply respond to by saying "I disagree". I've been here since April 2002 myself, and even I've known that science apps are always updated automatically. If you weren't aware of it, then obviously you didn't read everything like I did. Whether you believe it or not, your system has been automatically updating science apps since 2002, which means you've seen v5 apps, v6 apps, and v6 "multibeam" science apps all automatically download to your system.

As for the "bogging down your system"... it sounds like there's something wrong and you should head over to Number Crunching to state what the symptoms are and to see if you can fix it.

To blame all your performance woes on the new v7 app is a bit short sighted. If the v7 app is buggy (as you seem to imply), then why isn't this happening on everyone else's machines?

We all know that SETI@home (and all projects that crunch numbers using your system) are some of the most stressful apps you can put your system through. So if there's a performance problem, it is only logical to conclude you have a weakness in your system.

A new version should be my choice

Actually, no it shouldn't. It is very important for the scientists to ensure that everyone is crunching data using the most current app the scientists wish everyone to be using. Crunching new data on older versions can ruin the scientific results.

In fact, you can't crunch workunits marked for v7 apps on the old v6 apps. So once the v6 workunits dried up, you wouldn't have any work to do, then you'd be complaining about having no work instead.

Thanks for reminding me of "all my details" which I already know. Dig up somemore and you will see I ran with so-called older versions for long periods of time until I CHOSE TO CHANGE as I upgraded my computer systems.. To me it is like a hobby watch some numbers go by without affecting the real things I CHOOSE to do. Years before I was much more involved with United Devices Cancer reseach projects until they choose to cut it off. Now for a charge you can use their software to run your own projects. I left, as I will do here.

No, you didn't stay with older versions until you chose to change. You must be confusing the BOINC framework, for which you do have a choice to upgrade, with the SETI@home science app, for which you do not have a choice.

Go here http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project

Change your preferences to not accept work except from any other app, and tick only the apps you like.

Be happy.

Sorry the default is to accept work from all applications. I know that is covered in the BOINC wiki. OBW BOINC, not SETI@home.

Yeah I could swear that TPTB did not automatically select SETI@home v7: yes
I had to do it manually

and if you didn't want work for newer applications should have said no
to "If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?" no

my current selections
they seem to work fine

Run only the selected applications
SETI@home Enhanced: no
Astropulse v505: no
SETI@home v7: yes
AstroPulse v6: no
If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? no

You are right on one point the old "legacy version" did run out of workunits ////but it was ALWAYS my choice to upgrade if I elected to continue. I decided to continue I upgraded my system....again my CHOICE....

Still incorrect. I've been here just as long as you and there has never been a choice not to upgrade. The option to receive newer workunits is relatively new; it didn't exist 11 years ago.

As OzzFan already mentioned, you are obviously confusing BOINC and SETI@home.

I'm still running BOINC 5.10.45 on this host (my choice), but at the same time, I'm running SETI@home v7 with that BOINC (not my choice).

Gruß,
Gundolf

I'm still wondering why you wanted a choice this time, but you had no choice through SETI@home v5, v6, and v6 Multibeam. Why should this time be any different?

Mr. MELund, read what everyone here has been telling you; you did not have a choice. The functionality to automatically upgrade the science applications has always been a part of the BOINC framework.

I still think you are confusing your choice to upgrade BOINC with SETI.

Melund--sorry man you have never had a choice in the type of workunits you ran--you do have a choice on the version of Boinc you run. Please try to see the difference.

@MELund, oddly enough, my system seems to have become faster in the weeks since the latest SETI application upgrade, both in browser functions and other local apps offline. I don't, however, attribute any changes to the SETI application or BOINC. Any change in system performance is likely coincidental.

First off: this poster has ONLY v6.03 units on his only rig; so he can't blame v7 as he probably never ticked it to accept them. He IS, however, running 7.0.28, which, IIRC, was buggy. But, as everyone points out, 7.0.28 was HIS choice.

Actually, you do have a choice as to which type of tasks you run, be it Astropulse, Seti Enhanced (for as long as these are still around), Seti v7 and only on CPU, only on GPU or on both CPU and GPU. But unless you use the anonymous platform, you don't have a choice as to which application version you run.

MeLund, I looked at your computer's tasks and you do not have any downloaded V7s.
Why are you upset about them since you have none? When V6 runs dry you will have none of them also.

I wish I would have been given a choice

Don't take us wrong, probably all of us hate automatic updates to Windows, browsers, etc. (e.g. I use SRWare Iron instead of Google Chrome to avoid automatic updates)

But new versions of science apps (which do other type of research) can't be avoided if the project stops distributing the old type of tasks (and if the user want to stay with the project)
(it's like if your country changes the currency - you can't continue to use the old currency much longer)

All projects do this.

Look your Einstein@Home tasks:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/results.php?hostid=6212307

They are "Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo) v1.33 (BRP4SSE)"

Looking here:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/apps.php

... you can see when this app was first distributed (at some point after that date this app was automatically downloaded to your computer)
Windows/x86 1.33 (BRP4SSE) 25 Jan 2013 10:04:33 UTC

Your Computer joined Einstein@Home on: "Created 27 Nov 2012 0:15:14 UTC")
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6212307

And ~2 months later 'your' BOINC automatically downloaded this new app from Einstein@Home servers.
