What are you guys' thoughts? Obviously, I have a machine (Voyager) that can power crunch pretty good! But in the summertime, oh boy, the computer room gets extra warm because of the heat generated by Voyager. By going to stock settings and crunching less work units at a time, this will surely drop the heat that expels from Voyager, right? If not, then I have to switch to just GPU work to keep the heat down.

Please give me your input. I built Voyager strictly to crunch for SETI@Home, and I'm going by the limited knowledge I have as I jumped into Lunatics quite early on and my hypothesis may not be correct.

Just crunch one task on cpu, no need to change anything else.

I have an idea, but I guess you will not like it... ;-)
Stop GPU crunching and the room will be less hot.

Stock SAH or with Lunatics apps, no noticeable difference, I think.

From my experiences, my PCs, the GPUs make the most heat.

Look to the back side of your PC case and test where the most heat comes.
The PSU, the exhaust/case fan, or GPU grid.

Or take/install an aftermarket GPU heatsink.
This could reduce the GPU temps and ambient temps.

Seems a more elegant solution would be to use TThrotle http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/index.html to set max temps for CPU and GPU. Then work, and heat output, can vary, low on hot days, higher on cool nights.

The advantage is that the GPU produces more work per watt then the CPU.

Nothing you will notice. The stock apps take longer because they use the CPUs not as efficiently as opt apps do. But the CPU is still @ 100% load and full clock speed. Sure, the load is not same and the CPU might get a bit colder, but that's nothing that will help in your case (I assume you want to have the room colder, not the CPU)

If not, then I have to switch to just GPU work to keep the heat down.

Or use at least less cores and let the unused cores clock down (in case you disabled that).

Well, with v7 and all, I decided to go stock for a bit anyway. The good news: I got my pretty screen saver back.

I'll optimize again when it's available to do so. I forgot how I did it last time, so thanks for the help I'll need in advance :D

When the installer package is ready, I'm sure there will be information in a thread on how to run it. But feel free to ask questions here.

Another alternative to hold down the heat during the day is to just reduce the hours of operation.

Or just reduce the number of cores beeing used.
Thats what we do during testing for example.

It doesn't matter what time of the year it is here my rigs just go flat out all the time and I have no troubles keeping them cool but then that is the way that I built them.

Summer in Australia can get extremely warm but I havn't had to resort to water cooling yet (I do think about it now and again though).

Cheers.

I guess... fans, fans and more fans.... at least that the way i keep my host cool in a tropical hot country with no AC and no water cooling.

As mentioned, the Advanced Preferences tab is your friend in this case.
You can set how much CPU to use and reduce it until the heat is manageable.
Or, you can program it to run Boinc only during the evening hours and avoid the heat of the day.

My tv puts off more heat than my cruncher so do my light bulbs and my toaster and my refrierator and my dryier and my oven and I live in virginia where the temps regularly are in the 90's and 100's during the summer so why scrafice the cruncher?

I just picked up a summer case. Now to decide which host to place inside. I'm pretty much looking at swapping the Win 8 host from the old Compaq workstation case to the new super ventilated one. They had the case on sale last Monday for $35 and free shipping. I needed a case anyway. Only problem is the new case uses 120mm fans and all my spares are 80mm. It's always something...

Supports 7 Fan Coolers

It's open on the Top, Bottom, Side, Rear, and Front...

I don't see how that's possible, unless you aren't actually crunching anything. lol.

I have been crunching sine 1999 have a rac of 35,000 and a credit of 25 million and that is with one cruncher so I crunch I use my 4 tons of ac to my domicle cool. So it is possible to crunch in the summer time I do not sacriface my laundry or cooking or watching tv or keeping food cool in the summer so not my cruncher either.

I guess all of my appliances are more energy efficient than yours...My cruncher gives off way more heat than my t.v.'s, etc, etc.

My cigerate lighter puts out more heat than my cruncher. All my appliances are effiecnt and are new and up to date.
