This is soooooooo wrong. Get this.......one company can claim rights to a string of DNA???? WTF??? The reason the test is so expensive is this: In 1998 Myriad Genetics patented two genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2. With its exclusive rights, Myriad developed a test for mutations on those genes trademarked "BRACAnalysis." Because it essentially owns the genes, Myriad is the only company that can conduct the test, so it sets the price. Not right. Soooooooooo, if some company comes up with a test for testicular cancer, that can be patented too????? What few nuts I have left shall never be owned by anybody. That's capitalism. This is the way they came up with to pay for the research instead of using taxes. The little guy gets it either way. (Now, I suggest this thread belongs in Politics, not the Cafe.) And, all fun and puns aside, my original post was to decry the cost of basic testing that many women should have a right to at a reasonable cost. The news article made me angry when I read it. Well the court is still out on that. See: Association for Molocular Pathology vs Myriad Genetic The case is still pending before the US Supereme Court. It is expected that the Court will rule that genes are not subject to patent protection. The name above is linked to a page with the updated info on the case.
