Hey, for the cost of a gallon of gas...the Trainz Simulator 12 bundle is on sale for $4. Okay, I just remembered to check it. This is just a bundle of simulations to run on the game, not the actual game itself. That's still $30. Has a LOT of bad reviews, too. I think I'll pass. Slightly more successful video taken yesterday. Merchant Navy class 35028 Clan Line on the British Pullman Passing South Croydon, unusually on the "up slow" normally speeds past on the "up fast". http://youtu.be/cEkL6FO1Vyg |

The perils of trying to video steam trains. :) I remember in the late 50s in Austria where they had steam locomotives in traffic from Innsbruck to Lannersbach. Wooden benches and hearing the engine puffing:) As a Young boy it was a really impressive memory. |

Hey, for the cost of a gallon of gas...the Trainz Simulator 12 bundle is on sale for $4. FYI, with this bundle, you get 10 Steam keys. Which is good, if you already own part of it. |

I am now officially qualified to go around in one-mile circles all by myself. Of course, it comes right at the end of the season when I have little opportunity to do it. I have to run the car for six whole days before I can start training on any other similar car (straight air brakes and K-controls). After a year, I can move up to Group II (PCC cars) and/or Group III (Chicago Aurora & Elgin, North Shore, L cars). Once I qualify on anything in either of those groups, I can go to Group IV (all other electric cars). I think I'd like to get into L cars, except that it's very difficult for me to get into L cars. Literally get in. I tried a couple weeks ago and just barely managed to hoist myself up from the ground. Not a problem if I'm in the barn or at the depot where there are portable stairs, but if I have a problem out on the line I could hurt myself getting down or get down and not be able to get up again.* But I suppose I can send out my conductor instead. (I did not say "not be able to get it up again.") David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Amazing! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2766637/Is-world-s-scenic-rail-route-Bridges-vast-canyons-Alpine-architecture-cut-lush-green-mountainside-s-actually-world-s-biggest-MODEL-railroad.html Is this the world's most scenic rail route? Bridges across vast canyons and Alpine architecture cut into the lush green mountainside... but it's actually the world's biggest MODEL railroad |

Good but feet-killing weekend. Was on the schedule for streetcar training, but since I qualified, I don't need to train any more. I offered to either take the car and let the operator not do it (he has bad knees) or be conductor on the L train. I was assigned as conductor. A friend showed up, so in between runs of the L train I took him for a ride on the streetcar, but mainly I was standing up, walking around, being conductor, and my feet were really letting me know how much they hate my safety shoes by the end of the day. Meanwhile, I was supposed to get keys to the cabinet in the office where the car controls are kept, the barns, and the cars themselves. The guy giving them to me didn't have them on him when I asked, and he was busy with some switching. He said he would give them to me if I came out on Sunday. I wasn't planning to, but I said I would to get the keys. Sunday, I arrived late, not expecting to do any work, but with my museum shirt with me just in case. I quickly realized from the radio that they were very busy and a bit shorthanded, so I put on the shirt and offered my services. I was made conductor on a 1902 CA&E car that was doing a charter run (one of three charter runs). I found the car and opened the barn door in front of it, but couldn't do anything else until the motorman showed up. We got it out fairly quickly, then went into the highly realistic "hurry up and wait" mode. Finally, we moved over to the L station where we were supposed to start the charter run. More waiting, but another electric car guy noticed sparks coming from one of the resistor banks, so the motorman called his son over and he made use of the time to crawl under the car and fix it, at least temporarily. After the run, the streetcar motorman asked if I could relieve him at 4:00 and I agreed, detaching myself from the CA&E car right then (the son helped take the car to the pit where they could take a better look at the resistors). At this point I finally got my keys; had to sign for the barn key. Once again, I went into "hurry up and wait" mode while more switching went on. Go around once and wait for switching. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. But finally, I was running the car all by myself with no training operator looking over my shoulder. Yay! And I put the car away by myself too (a little nerve wracking with no one to tell me where the insulated gap in the wire was, but I managed). Then I hung around watching the switching long enough to remember that I forgot to drain the water out of the air tank. Fortunately, I now had a barn key to let myself back in, having locked it up on my way out. I am on the schedule for the streetcar for the first three Saturdays in October, and the last Sunday, which will be the last day it runs this year. I requested to have it the first day next year too, but it may be too early for that request to be remembered. I'm also on as conductor of the Happy Holiday Train on Saturday, Dec. 6, and trainman on Sunday, Dec. 14. This is on another set of L cars that I haven't worked before. That closes out the year.
