Word is that #6 arriving Chicago today has two new ACS-64s. Currently running about 4 hours late; if it holds to that, it should arrive Chicago a bit after 6pm local. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Oh great, I would like to see that !! Looking at Amtrak "track a train" it says 4 hrs 19 min currently, ETA at CHI is 6:44 local, and it has been slipping back so I expect nearer 7pm, that is 1am here and I have an early start tomorrow. Have to see how it goes!! |

GBB at 4:10 would put it here at NPV at about 6:10, and figure about half an hour past that to CHI. However, it looks like it may have lost more time, since it hasn't gotten to PCT yet. This is a big holiday weekend in the US, including at IRM. There are several web cams so you can catch lots of action. Sunday was cloudy all day, with a bit of rain in the morning and more mid-afternoon. However, late in the day the clouds cleared somewhat and it became a pleasant evening -- after almost everyone had left! 1630 passed its steam test on Wednesday and did indeed run this weekend. Her first trip was at 12:15, which complicated everything else at the station with not only two electric trains but also the Zephyr working off of station track 1. When 1630 finally did get going, it took a couple of cycles to get the trains in order so it and the Zephyr weren't both at the station at the same time. No sooner did that happen than 1630 had a brake problem with its water car and screwed everything up again! Twice, the dispatcher sent the other L train down to Jefferson St. and ran us into 50th Ave. because the Zephyr was taking up the entire length of track 1. Both times, our trolley pole went the wrong way and I had to fix it. I didn't like hanging out the back end of 1797 because there's nothing solid to hold onto. I also decided climbing on and off L cars without benefit of external stairs (or the L platform at 50th Ave.) is not a good idea for my knees. I did considerable walking because of that, a lot more than I normally like to. Because of 1630's brake problem and the rain, the dispatcher sent us to bed early and my friend Mike never got to ride with me. He's never ridden those cars, either. I spent all of Saturday and a good bit of today resting my feet and knee. I think I will try to see a podiatrist next week. The next two Sundays, I'm doing conductor training on the coach train. The tracker shows it past PCT, but it hasn't posted a time for the stop there yet. My new guess is 6:30 here and 7ish into CHI. Well went past the camera at 7:01 local With the sun low enough in the sky to be on the north side of it. Now I am off to bed!! I don't blame you. [edit] Have you seen the pictures of 642 since it was painted at Beech Grove? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Have you seen the pictures of 642 since it was painted at Beech Grove? I actually saw it the when it was brought from Beech Grove to Chicago. However it was just a few days after the Amtrak 188 crash and I did not post it then |

Boffins silently track train commuters without tripping Android checks Smartmobe accelerometer data reveals your movements, isn't secured in any way. Nanjing University boffins Jingyu Hua, Zhenyu Shen, and Sheng Zhong have tracked commuter train trips with 92 percent accuracy using stolen phone accelerometer data. |

Two things: 1. Bernie, did you catch #6 today? It had only one engine, and its first coach was wrapped for some attraction in San Francisco. I happened to see it go by as I was going for a haircut, but I didn't get a good look at it. I read somewhere about the wrap, but I don't remember the details. 2. Somebody at IRM mounted a GoPro on (apparently) the frame of one of the trucks (bogies) under the Nebraska Zephyr and recorded a trip looking at a wheelset and related parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IgePMTDuxY You can see the brakes applying and releasing, the wheels going up and down in relation to the truck, and the whole truck moving in relation to the cars riding on it. I need to look at it for a third time, and maybe fourth and fifth, to figure out which track it's on as it starts, but later I clearly figured out the switches at both ends of Johnson Siding, then Seeman Road, then the switch at Four Mile Siding. Two things: Yes I noticed that, a rather tatty 118 It left Chicago on the 22nd with 199. Also the wrap is the same car that first appeared on the 6 that arrived on the 3rd (coach baggage 31017) and was used on the yard excursion train for Train Day at Chicago on the 9th. Since then it has been going back and forth on the California Zephyr The phrase on the orange band is "Never the same always San Francisco - Always" As far as I can make out . |

Something a little different Quite often on a Thursday afternoon a young railfan spends a few hours by the Chesterton crossing, he seems quite "keen". Today when he spotted this in the approaching consist he didn't really seem to know quite where to stand to get the best picture. (he is in the foreground) SOO 6053, an SD60. The SOO line was taken over by Canadian Pacific in 1990 and fully consolidated in the early 2000's so these locos are extremely rare. And our young railfan was suitably pleased. Nice to see the enthusiasm. |

Not nessecerally. He could have been shooting video. And some smart phones have a panoramic feature that allows you to pan the phone and the pictures turn out great. If that was the case he didnt have to move the camera, The train moved instead. Of course this is all conjecture on my part. But He sure did look like he enjoyed himself. And thats all that really matters:) [/quote] Old James |

Google finds lots of cab shots of North American engines. Keep in mind that each owner can have very different cab layouts, some are going for "glass cockpits" these days. Still looking for the rest of the interior. Here is an F40. |
