I was wondering about this program:

http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/

Do the PC's need to be networked for this to work ?

I have 2 other pc's crunching right now and only 1 monitor between them .

If I could get this to work , then I could keep an eye on them both with out swapping things around so much .

Yes the PC's need to be on a network. It needs a little setting up but well worth it. I have 6 PC's running and Boinc Tasks let me monitor and adjust all from my main PC.

Here is a quick screen shot, with computer names removed.

All functions of the boinc manager are available from boinc tasks

Another option is to use a KVM switch, such as one of these at Newegg.
It will connect your one monitor to more than one computer. press the button to switch between channels. DVI and VGA models listed.

Or, for $50 to $100 bucks you can get a 2 port KVM switch and cables to easily switch your monitor, keyboard, and mouse between the two computers.
I have an 8 port Hawking that switches between most of my rigs, and the 9th runs stand alone with it's own monitor.

LOL..Andrew beat me to that suggestion.

Well I was looking for something that didn't cost the price of the new PSU that I need anyway...
that's why I was looking at the boinc tasks program...
Just don't think I have the know how to set it up...

I'm too mentally challenged to do it... LOL

In your case, I suppose freeware beats hardware.

I suspect somebody will happen along to give you the help you need to get it working. Not my area of expertise, I am afraid.

If both computers connect to the internet via the same router, then they're networked already.

Yes they are on 1 router , the program couldn't find them , and I don't know how to set that up.

I have never had to do anything like that before , so I never had the opportunity to learn that stuff...

maybe I can figure it out , will take a while... LOL

EDIT :
The program found 1 of my PC's but the check box is greyed out , what causes that ?

Set the computer that you want to use to monitor the others as "local host" in the IP address field on the computers tab. Then enter the ip address of the others to add them. The setup instructions are here.

It will take a while to work through the menus and customize it the way you want it. I use BOINCTasks for a single computer and rarely look at BOINC Mgr. I just check it to confirm menu language when posting. BOINC still runs and does the work, but BT is a better gui.

Note this very important line from the BoincTasks setup instructions:

If they are not there already, make the files remote_hosts.cfg and gui_rpc_auth.cfg on each remote computer.

That requires moving the monitor and keyboard to each of the remote machines - hopefully, for one last time - before you start. Remember to re-start BOINC on each machine after making the files, as described in the setup instructions.

I saw that and looked in one of the remote PC's and the remote_hosts.cfg file is not there... I don't know how to make it either , This file is there gui_rpc_auth.cfg , I opened it to look at it with notepad , it's just a bunch of numbers that I don't understand what it means...
I am WAY over my head in this...
I never had the chance to get any training in this kind of stuff , I'm just lost... Maybe I can do something else eventually.

Thanks for all the help you have tried to be...

For a Boinc Manager, or Boinc Tasks to connect to a remote host,

1)The remote host has to have the IP address or Host Name of the host that is going to connect to it, that is is stored in the remote host's remote_hosts.cfg file,
if it's not there create it with notepad, and populate it with the local IP address or host name of the host running Boinc Tasks.

2)Boinc Manager, or Boinc Tasks has to have the password for the host it's trying to connect to, that is the password stored in the remote host's gui_rpc_auth.cfg file.

Another way to do it (for free) is to use VNC.

http://www.realvnc.com/

What this does is let you remotely sign into any PC on your network (that is running the VNC host).

It's not specifically designed to administer BOINC like BoincTasks is, but you have full access to the remote PC, so you can run other software, install updates etc.

It's commercial software, but the free home version will do what you need.

What BoincTasks version are you using?

[url]gui_rpc_auth.cfg should be there.
But you can create one with Notepad.
It's as simple as it gets. Type in a password in the file and store it.

This explains things: http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/manual.html

Run Find Computers and select Scan address range.

That way you can see the IP address of the other computer.
In the column BOINC there is a text what is in it.
It should give you Yes, Not connected. (Not connected because you have no valid password)

The IP's change as we log off and On each time.

Be careful to work on the correct page when you ask questions like that.

Your router will have two IP addresses: one for the public line leading out of your house to the internet. This will probably be labeled 'WAN', for Wide Area Network. This may be set to get its IP address from your ISP by DHCP: whether it is or not, don't make any changes.

The other IP address is for your LAN, or Local Area Network: those are the connections to the others computers inside your house. This IP address will probably be 192.168.x.y, or possibly 10.0.x.y

From what you say, your router is probably acting as a DCHP server, allocating compatible addresses to the computers on your LAN as needed. That's the easiest way to manage things: most routers, even small home models, these days allow you to 'reserve' IP addresses, so that each computer gets the same IP address every time it's turned on: check that option out first.

If you can't find a way of doing that, you could switch to static IP addresses (manually assigned to each computer), but remember that you will need to manually configure the other values set by DHCP, too. You will need, as a minimum, the 'Gateway' address and at least one DNS server address - both of these can normally be set to the local (LAN) address of the router.

Can you send my a couple of dump files.
Because I don't have any known problem with 1.46 and I like to fix your problem.

There are a lot of places like Dropbox to upload the dump file(s).
