The misuse of the apostrophe gets me every day.

Or should that be

Every day what gets me, is the misuse of the apostrophe.

(does anyone care anyway ....)

To me, the latter implies that the misuse of the apostrophe is the only thing that gets you, which I doubt is the case.

To me, it's mostly just an irritation that I can usually ignore. And as you can see, I myself am a big infinitive splitter.

went through the exam, and I think I would pass.. hehe - Anyway,
I will never get to know the final outcome.. and I will continue to
go with my Norwenglish.. After all the most important is to be able
to communicate.. when I want to. ;-D

Ive not read all the posts in this thread... so how did it go ?

@ Chris; What would happen to me if i read too many of your posts? ;-D
If one know what one is up to, one can take precautions. hehe

I just received a cable with some other things I ordered

It is made in China, and advises me of the following::

Caution
Insert securely lest should be detached in set

:: While the general message seems clear enough, push it all the way in..
the language is a bit confusing, and not in a manner we would be familiar with
speaking.

I guess what I am trying to say is that with minimal English skills, you too
could write technical guidance.

It is a confusing language, as the one comic strip played with:
GNU(a type of animal)
New(recent, not old)
Knew(Previous knowledge of)
All pronounced the same.
and it is common for us to play with the phonetic similarities in much of our humor. Our slang vocabulary is always changing and near limitless, and should probably be reserved for advanced studies.

You could even go to urbandictionary.com, but it may have a high content of vulgarities.

Tokyo Hotel - Is forbitten to steal hotel towels please. If you are not person to do such thing is please not to read notis.

On the box of a clockwork toy made in Hong Kong: Guaranteed to work throughout its useful life.

In a Bangkok temple: It is forbidden to enter a woman even a foreigner if dressed as a man.

In a Vienna hotel: In case of fire, do your utmost to alarm the hotel porter.

Thought I would try to break down some of the problems here....
Tokyo Hotel mostly spelling, and in the notice it is telling if you are honest do not read it. Too late!

Clockwork toy: They are saying it will work until it stops.

Temple: It comes across as do not have sexual relations with a woman even if they are dressed as a man. At least they spelled Forbidden right though..

Hotel: They are telling us if we see a fire to scare the porter. Charging at them naked with a kitchen knife should work.

Way back in 1970, I had to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in order to be accepted at a US College. Apparently they were not aware that people other than Americans spoke English. After arriving at said American College, I realized that many US citizens would have had a hard time with the TEFL.

During my Naval career, I spent over 10 years in Hawaii. To this day I still get asked "Do they speak English there?" (sort of), and "Do they take American money?" (most definitely).

By the same people, no doubt, who claim Obama isn't a citizen.

I really don't know. I don't engage such people in political discussions. When you argue with a fool, you only make him look smart.

Le patriotisme est autorisé, le chauvinisme est pas ! Bien que la Grande-bretagne est une petite île au large du nord de l'Europe, nous sont encore connues par la moitié du monde que la mère patrie.

Justement la moitié? ;)

A few years ago, before i started my PhD, i knew i had the place from conversation with the supervisor, however, i had to register with the university's application system as a formality.
Fairly standard questions; name, DOB, ethnic background etc, until i got to page three which said:
Please upload a copy of your ELTU English language competence certificate, or acceptable equivalent from this list.
Which of course i didn't have, never having needed to attend an English language class, and there was no option to skip.
So i created a PDF saying "English is my first language!" and uploaded that in place. It seemed to do the trick as i was accepted. However, it's a strange omission on the form to give no way round such a question for native English speakers.
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Sten, this is NOT the politics forum. Please do not post those opinions here.

You had political opinions yourself, about how great England is, although you wrote it in French. Don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.

That's kinda harsh, isn't it?
