Hi,

Astropulse uses over 18% CPU at all times, even while Boinc is suspended. I find this weird, is it expected?

Thanks!

BOINC is an environment to manage the SETI@Home applications, suspending BOINC will not necessarily stop the applications running.

Then I wonder what will... ;-)
But it should. It just doesn't do so on Astropulse applications. Last night I reported two cases of this --though both with the AP ATI OpenCL app-- to the Seti developers, and they're looking into it, to see if it's something with BOINC or something else.

If by "suspending" the OP means minimising to the task bar then that has no effect on the operation of the applications. Likewise, exiting the manager (by right clicking on the minimised icon on the task bar and selecting "exit"), but not ticking the "exit science applications" box will leave the application running but not the manager.

Taking into account that two others (person 1; person 2) have reported that Astropulse (on their ATI GPUs) continues when they suspend BOINC, be it through the Activity menu, be it through 'do not use when computer is in use' policies, I suspect that this user has a similar problem. Only with AP on his Nvidia GPU. :-)

Which then either throws the ball in front of the Astropulse developer (Eric Korpela), or at BOINC's feet (David Anderson). Both have been warned and are on the case. Eric had seen similar problems already, but only with random tasks from other projects.

I have this very problem, I have a Nvidia GPU. I tried suspending everything cpu, gpu, network. Astropulse task just continues along at >18% CPU defiantly, I have to end process it to stop it.

I tried suspending everything ..... I have to end process it to stop it.

No, you didn't "tried suspending everything" - you didn't try to:
- suspend the task (and resume it)
- suspend the project (and resume it)
- exit BOINC and start it again

Next time instead of "end process to stop it" (which ends in error and no credit for the work done on the task)
do one of the 3 'things' above.

('they' are working on a fix (the 'fix' is already done and probably the new app is already put on test at SETI@home/AstroPulse Beta)

This post by Raistmer (the developer of the app) make me think he found a solution/workaround for the problem:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=71581&postid=1367026#1367026

To correct you. If I say I tried to suspend everything, then I did, full stop, the end. I don't need you to tell me what I have or haven't tried, thank you. Try asking me what I tried next time.
To try to be condescending in the way you were in your reply, just doesn't help anyone and makes you look bad.

I did everything you suggested before you suggested it, I wouldn't of posted if I hadn't.

You made an assumption that being a "New Member", that I wouldn't of already looked into trying different things. You were wrong to do so.
I in fact, after taking time to look into it again, found Raistmer's post a day after the time of my original post.
Please try to withhold your condescending attitude in future, it is not wanted thanks.

But to clarify, I hadn't been home long enough to set BOINC going for a day or 2 and when I fired BOINC up today, the problem seems to be fixed since it no longer occurs. So all is good :)

I didn't notice 'New member'
My conclusion is based on your one-line post with only one sentence of info:
"I tried suspending everything cpu, gpu, network" (and network is irrelevant)
No, I will not ask "did you try ..." since you explicitly say what you tried (cpu, gpu, network)

So you now claim that even BOINC Exit (so no boinc.exe in memory) do not stop OpenCL AstroPulse from running?
That will be very strange. (AstroPulse app have to exit in a few seconds)
Can you tell us how do you 'exit BOINC'? (some people only exit BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe) but that will not stop any processing)

the problem seems to be fixed since it no longer occurs. So all is good :)

But I'm not aware of any change in the stock app, if there is change there will be new version number (e.g. opencl_nvidia_101):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=6993674&offset=0&show_names=0&state=0&appid=12

And the 'real' version is in the Stderr (one of your tasks):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=2999129267
Windows x86 rev 1316, V6 match, by Raistmer

So why now 'all is good' is mystery (something changed in your computer?)

I don't "now claim", I claimed at the time, by saying "I have to end process it to stop it". At the time, I used both file/exit and right-click the tray icon exit. I suspend everything before exiting though. It just didn't stop until the end process.

To be honest, I didn't check for version number change, all I cared about was that the problem stopped. I did do a windows update before running BOINC again though, which is the only change at all. So I wonder if that had any effect?

I am just happy that the problem has stopped happening.
