Jason´s I know this is not the right thread but i can´t get the answer in anyone else... I need to switch down few 580/590 and I´m going to buy two or 3 new GPU´s, my master guru please give me a path of light, what i buy, a 690, the Titan or wait for the new 780 series? Their main use is only for SETI and i have the PSU ready avaiable to run anyone of them. My main concern is the electric bill because i actualy use more kw/hr than i could, ok i know the new ones go to the 300W range but 1 690/titan uses a lot less power than 2x580 or 1x590. Thanks in advance. |

Only 1 out of the 8 GPU`s the number one host is running is a Titan. I doubt it makes the 50K difference in RAC. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

Not to constantly refer to ExchangeMan's beast (which I imagine is this glowing cube submerged in bubbling fluid), that system is running a Titan, a 680 and three 690s, last I looked. You can always look through his valid list and attempt to come up with a reasonable credit rate for each type of card. But considering the shortage we currently have and that in the past those 8 cards processed a unit on average every 30-45 seconds, we may not have the same distribution of data across all types of cards, as multiple cards may be vying for work at the same time. Jason´s Juan, I have the #1 host and there is only 1 Titan in it. Ya, the Titan can kick out a lot of work, but a 690 will do more. You also have to look at the number of slots available. I bought the Titan because I just wanted to see what it could do. I was in the process of designing a new cruncher, but with the Seti situation the way it is I could never keep it busy. Unless things change I can't see buying any more high powered GPUs unless you crunch for another project that is not so constrained on resources. I'm hoping this situation is temporary with Seti and we will return to all the work units we need when we need them. When things were running really good with Seti last week and we were in a shorty storm, I could crunch 45-50 shorties in the 5 minute update interval - it was insane to sit and watch the Boinc display updating like that. I didn't care about the power bill - it was worth it. |

Jason´s Thanks to all for the answers, i actualy have few 690/670 running so i know it´s performance, my main question is about the Titan performance compared with the 690. I can´t find a reliable source to compare it´s performance in SETI work, probabily because the SETI problems itself. And please forgive my curiosity but i belive some of us will be happy if you post a photo of your "baby" i´m sure a lot of us will love that. Thanks |

Jason´s Haha well looks like plenty of helpful people gave the answers when I was sleeping (I like that :D), so I'll try give some insight into why instead. Yeah I definitely agree with the choice of 690s for your situation. The biggest factor here is you're running two devices per slot, and so you get more Video memory bus lines in total. A fair few of the main algorithms in the multibeam software become memory bound when there is more than enough compute horsepower, so we run more instances to fill up the compute units, and hide any latency in those memory levels as well. Once doing those things (filling the GPU & hiding latencies) then only raw bandwidth is left, so 2 devices with their own memory busses is going to be faster. There are several things that could change the picture over the next year: - Titan is at the beginning of its lifecycle, 680 & 690 in the middle. traditionally more performance is extracted from drivers, compilers & libraries over time (about a year and a half), that ripple down into application, including some features of the Keplers to use yet, Titan just starting. - Dual Titan card anyone ? maybe not practical with the existing chip (there was no dual 480 for power-heat reasons), but with sli popular for gaming, some form is likely with a reduced chip IMO. - V7 multibeam introduces autocorrelations. These are fairly straightforward computations not that highly optimised yet, quite memory & bus bound. Can't really do a lot there until V7 comes online, to prove the basic implementation. - Potential major new optimisations are becoming feasible with heavy research. They might influence the next year or so, and juggle performance on older Vs newer architectures some more, along with CPU apps, possibly changing how memory bound certain processing is. So for now, in raw cost-efficiency & lifecycle terms the dual GPU 690 has the edge, mostly because it is 2 x 680s with semi mature application, drivers & libraries. Jason´s Actually, it's not much to look at. It's sitting on a wooden patio table in a spare bedroom. Because of the heat the thing generates when it's running flat out, I don't think it will be possible to ever put it into a case. It's actually kind of a mess, but since it's stable I don't mess with it much. I am not looking forward to summer but perhaps the lack of work from Seti will mitigate that problem. |

Jaun, My "big" cruncher has two 690s in it, and does suffer a bit from getting on the warm side. So Make sure you have adequate cooling, not only for the GPU, but also for the CPU - it would appear that one of the hot air outlets from the 690 is back into the case, which is far from ideal. I've replaced the air cooling on the CPU with one of the "all in one" water coolers, with the radiator on the back of the case, venting outwards. This has dropped the case internal temperature by a few degrees - enough to move from "uncomfortable" to "comfortable" inside the case and for the CPU (about a 15-20C drop in CPU temp). I've now got most of the hardware to water cool the 690s, I'm just awaiting the tuit (round) to arrive, along with a day or so free time and that will be done. This should drop the case internal temperatures quite a long way as well as drop the GPU temps somewhat, they are currently sitting at about 85C with 6 MB tasks running on each card, and the air-on temperature is in the mid to high twenties. Jaun, Thanks for the warming, but i allready have a 2x690 host (realy was a 3x690 host but due the lack of SETI work i split the GPUs on 2 diferent hosts) so i know the front heat air exaust, because i can´t use AC and i live in a hot tropical country all my cases have some extra fans to handle the heat. I allready place the order for 2 new 690 but takes months to arrive here in my tax hungry country. Thansk for all the help. |
