Installation instructions are either missing or need a lot of work.

Why should I bother to write better instructions?! Most people don't ever bother to read the f* readmes or release notes and the bloody things are a lot of work.

Remind me, next time Jason releases, not to put any effort into nice packaging or the whole faciliated manual install rigmarole, it's not appreciated.

Oh yes, I do f* know that there's a lot of happy people out there that installed without a lot of trouble, but they aren't very vocal.
You only ever see the guys that complain.
No wonder tech people burn out that quickly.

Pardon me if I don't use my limited time and energy for explaining why those packages ended up the way they are.

As for instructions, there's a readme. Judging from the number of rigs running x41zc and the number of posts asking for help with install, I'd say the information contained is sufficent for a reasonably advanced user.
Not to mention that I always put 'if you need help, ask' into any of those documentation files. It's not my <censored> fault if people don't RTFM.

This Jason´s builds are clearery marked for "advanced users only" so is expected that kind of users knows what they doing.

About the driver crash, I have a similar insue with the 690 in one of my hosts (i have 3 with 690 but only 1 shows the problem) few days ago and the problem was generated by the windows update program, for some "M$" reason when it detects the 690 it install an old driver over the new one and then the entire system crashes after some time, specialy if you crunch more than one project (my problem happens with GPUGrid+SETI). How to fix that? re-install a new driver downloaded direct from nvidia, and never allow windows update install a video driver again use allways only nvidia certified driver. Just to rememeber, when you install the new driver allways use clean instalation.

Why I am running Lunatics 0.40 release, cpu and gpu. It works. Software without installation instructions does not work, obviously.

Using the optimized applications is targeted for the "advanced user" I would say. The installer packages they put a lot of work into helped branch out to less advanced users.

The updated apps released without installers are more along the lines of "advanced user" & the documentation provided with them reflects as such. If you do not feel comfortable with the level of instructions provided with the releases. Then the best option for you is to wait until the next packaged installer release.

The application obviously works & there are a number of people willing to assist in getting it up and going.

If you do want to use it you might want to try "I'm having trouble getting '_____' to work" instead of "This @$#&! doesn't work". I'm sure the later is not appreciated by those that spend their free time releasing these apps for us.

I would add to Hal9000's comment - it is considered to be one of the biggest forum crimes to hijack a help thread with your own problem.

I can see everybody's pretty worked up.

As the application author:
While this particular application isn't in final release form(i.e. automated installer & or project distributed), I request that those attempting to help users continue to be sympathetic to those that struggle with the Boinc anonymous platform mechanism, which is unwieldy and poorly documented (by Boinc or elsewhere), and the reason why the first installers were devised, and will continue to be provided for final releases.

In addition, I request that the requisite warnings be provided including:

- complexity of manual installation, and unlikliness of detailed step-by step instructions to be provided under 'Beta Advanced User' scenarios, mostly due to tester target audience & development focus on the application itself

- With applications installed under anonymous platform, you need to monitor for updates, and apply them. (working on something to address this but that's a way off)

- For many the most appropriate option is using stock applications (warts and all), due to the automated infrastructure being in place. In particular, once V7 rolls out here as on the Beta project, x41zc (or descendant) delivery will be automatic to those under stock... Which on V7 transition will probably mean most people.

The transition to V7 has been a long one fraught with all kinds of challenges. Try not to let something as basic as appropriate audience get things heated up needlessly.

Thanks, I appreciate the interest in pushing things toward a more publicly digestible format, and current limitations are pretty well understood.

Jason

Again: Did you see: (from the general notes...)

... standalone manual install package (intended for advanced users),...

If you are a advanced user you must know what to do and how to install manualy a package (just a simple copy of the files to the project directory and aimerge the allready supplied cmd), if no you could wait until the automated install version will be avaiable or politely ask for help, that´s the best way to learn something from ours allways ready to help comunity.

Do you have a readme on how to become an advanced user? It would be very helpful.

Hello Jason. Thank you for chiming in.

I am not upset at all, others might be.

I knew that I would have to install "manually". I was expecting instructions along the lines of: Copy file A to directory X, copy file B to directory Y, run file D, etc. When I did not find anything that tells me how to install this package, well... no instructions, no installation, end of story.

What I found funny is that someone provided link to your site to get the package. I simply followed their advice, followed the link, went to download section, downloaded the package, unzipped it and read the readme, at which point the "train" came to the screeching halt. From the responses from some members of the community, apparently the uninitiated like me need to learn some kind of secret handshake or something.

Anyway, carry on, I will do without.

Yep, exactly. As you probably read into my last post, I'm not personally a fan of the Boinc Anonymous Platform Mechanism in its raw form, and prefer insulating users with simpler mechanisms. I hope as I get closer to working out my Application manager project, that you'll be willing to provide feedback from a novice user perspective. Ultimately I'd like that to be general user focussed.

jgopt.org

Boinc 3rd party Application Manager
Codename: AppMan
Project Status: Detailed design stage
Brief Description: The need for simplified gui based boinc science application management & configuration under the Boinc Platform, along with recent compiler/library licensing issues exposed limitations in the evolved form of managing Boinc applications under anonymous platform, namely maintenance overhead associated with unified package release in the event of rapid development changes, or other changes in circumstances. A secured, self updating & maintaining system is proposed to address these limitations, based loosely on schemes used by popular online gaming engines, on a cross project, cross development team footing.
Participation: informal whitepaper & proof of concept / prototypes under development, intended for user and developer comment. contact at jgopt dot org

I'd expect something like that would be great, once final release by the project is approved.
