Message 1362428 - Posted: 29 Apr 2013, 8:17:10 UTC

Hi,

Upgraded o the latest client (7.0.64(x64)) and now whenever a gpu task is started, it will only run for about 1 sec out of 10. I had no tasks queued when upgraded. Old client was running Lunatics and event log seems to pick up xml ok. Project has been reset twice with same result.

Is there a simple solution?

cheers

You'd need to un-hide your computers so we can look at some details.

Can you be a bit more specific than "run for about 1 sec"? I assume you mean they error out almost straight away, but we'd need to look at the task errors, etc.

If you are worried about your privacy have a look at what information is shows for the tasks and computers, there is nothing personally identifiable. We can't even see the computer names (although you can).

With your computers hidden we can't help you without a lot of details.

Take a look at my computers and you will see that no sensitive details can be seen by others but they will let us know probably a lot more than you can tell us. ;-)

Cheers.

Also, from what BOINC version did you upgrade?

Im wondering if he had 7.0.28 installed and just upgraded to the new boinc version without setting NNT and letting his cache empty.

"1 sec out of 10" as written sounds like a 10% CPU usage thermal throttle (from client preferences).

If it worked before the boinc upgrade it works the same afterwards. any changes are due to the boinc upgrade and/or change of preferences.

The apps (any app regardless of Lunatics or stock) either runs or it doesn't. HOW it runs is up to BOINC.

Well there are no errors.

Put simply, my GPU(gtx 680) will only be in use for about 1 second in every 10. The actual GPU is not constantly being used.

I have not changed any preferences before/since upgrade. Before the boinc client upgrade the GPU would be in use 100% of the time, now it seems like only 10% of the time.

This can also be seen in the task progress, it takes 10 seconds for the progress to to click over another second (elapsed).

Disregard, I reinstalled the earlier version 7.0.28 x64 and all is running normal again. I did not change any settings once again.

I did check them tho, and I did notice that in in tools->computing preferences I do have 10% set for CPU time, but that should not be applied to the GPU.

Anyway, operations are normal with the older client.

Maybe this is it from the release notes:

"Enforce resource shares across all processor types".

Bit silly not to update the the string "% CPU time" if this is it.

Would be easy to test that for anyone that uses a GPU. I will upgrade again after this batch of units is completed and see if this is it, and report back if no one else has confirmed this.
