I have broadband and got it when I got my new pc about 3 months ago. When I turn my pc on a Speedtouch Dial up box appears with my password and username etc in and it asks if I want to connect.I have to click on connect for it to connect. It is a speedtouch USB ADSL PPP and is connected at 576.0Kbps.I always leave it on but notice sometimes I go away for a while and come back and try to open a web page and it says "page cannot be displayed".The connection has dropped so I have to click on the Speedtouch link on my desktop to bring the dial up box up to reconnect. It does not connect automatically.Does this sound abit weird to you?I know nothing about broadband but thought it was always on .Is there a way I can make it connect automatically if it drops when I am out or on holiday? At the moment I have to click connect for it to work.Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Do you have a firewall (like ZoneAlarm) installed? I know my connection will fail if ZA crashes.

You have had ZoneAlarm crash? I've been using it for about 3 or 4 years and have never seen it crash.

Siran of Vulcan.
I had Zonealarm on my old pc and it never crashed or anything.Going by replies etc I think it is my cheap modem thatcould be causing the connection to drop.I do remember someone saying something about cheap free modems given to people are abit unstable.Maybe I will have to get a better one.

I have Verizon DSL. I have lots of computers running. In my case If I use an Ethernet connection I dont need all that softwear that comes with the install. It connects right when I plug in. No log on BS always on. If I have to use a USB connection I have to install the driver for the modem but thats it I dont install all the other stuff because I dont want to log on or get disconected after 15min of no activity. Check your conection settings and dissable any disconect from internet after so many minutes. Hope this helps.

It used to happen when I had Win98 when something caused it to stop responding.

Knocking on wood here, I have the ORIGINAL cable modem that the @home people gave me back in 1999! It is still pumping out the data, both ways, and works just fine! It is an RCA. I own it and it is working fine.

Oh, I have installed ZA on MANY computers and NEVER had one crash because of ZA.

Just to clarify, I didn't say my computer crashed because of ZA, but rather ZA itself crashed (as in stopped responding.) When that happened my internet connection was broken.

Your connection uses a technology called PPPoE -- it's broadband, but you log in like dialup.

Most small firewall/routers (Linksys, D-Link, etc.) can handle the PPPoE log in for you, and reconnect as needed.

... and add significant security.

I've got a Speedtouch USB modem also (the green stingray) & i have no problems with the connection dropping out.
It could be a problem with your system, the phone line, or your ISP.

As for connecting automatically, select the Connect Automatically option in the dialup connection prompt, make sure your password has been saved & it should take care of itself.

I have the Speedtouch 330, it used to drop out or have problems connecting. In the end I found that it was my BT line. When talking on the phone there was a crackling sound in the background that was caused by a loose connection in the green box at the end of my road. It might be worth getting BT to check your line.

Now that i'm more awake,
In your BONIC account, General preferences, Network Usage,
Confirm before connecting to internet- Yes (Although BOINC ignores this)
Disconnect when done- Yes (BOINC actually takes notice of this).

As long as your password has been saved in the Dialup Networking connection dialogue box BOINC will connect once each work unit is completed, upload the result & disconnect. It will download workunits as required.

Rachel,

I have a fair bit of experience with your speedtouch modem, and IMHO they are absolute rubbish. What you're experiencing is typical of this modem. The biggest problem IMO is caused by the fact they connect to your PC using USB. You should really try and use a modem that connects to the PC by an ethernet connection - they're a lot more stable than USB versions.

Personally, I would throw it in the bin (or better still, sell it on e-bay) and spend a few bucks/pounds getting a decent broadband modem/firewall/router. I replaced mine with a netgear DG834 and couldn't be happier. I would thoroughly recommend this model and also look at the equivalent linksys product.

With the netgear my connection is always on, no "dial-up" type procedure required when you first boot/reboot and it has a 4 port switch built in to add extra seti machines. Of course it also has a very good true SPI firewall built in so there's no need to run a software firewall (I don't and I've never been attacked) which often conflicts with other software.

The netgear modem/firewall/router plugs straight into your phone line and has 4 ethernet ports to connect up 4 computers that all share the internet broadband connection. The best thing is they just work - no more connection problems and no more software firewall conflicts plus it's one less piece of (critical) software to constantly keep updated

Hope that helps,

Ned
