I hate to say it , But , I'm outta here probably untill some time in july , unless some miracle happens.
I have had at least 3 BSOD's this morning , and I hope none of the WU's error out. I have about 1.5 Hrs work of WU's left. Then I shut down.

It will be at least july before I can get parts to fix this PC.

I will start with a Brand new Sata 3 HD , if that doesn't work , then some new faster Ram , if that doesn't work then , PSU , MB , DVD , or what ever it takes to get this thing fixed.

It Will NOT Beat ME... LOL

Sorry to hear you had no joy . I take it reinstall no work then ? maybe you can het lucky and some richy rich person will thow out a perfectly good machine and you can cannibalise it like I have . Got a good g31 gigabyte m/b only 7 days ago and it's the 1 I put the old core 2 duo in .Alas I gotta buy a new power pack tomorrow so I can give the 1 I got back to a friend

I don't know... I have a 200 Gig WD sata 2 hd . I can't get the OS installed on it with this MB for some reason , had the bios set to IDE and all that , Just wouldn't work...I checked the HD with WD's diagnostic program ,WinDLG 1.24, It checked OK.

I'm just disgusted , until I can get a sata 3 drive and reinstall the OS ,on it ( or try to anyway ) I won't know if it's just the MB at fault.

OK, then try this....

Win 98 Startup disk

Burn the iso to disk, have computer bootup from CD/DVD rom drive.

Delete all partitions on disk then create new partition & format. remove disk, reboot with installation disk.

Have had that problem several times with XP/Vista/Win 7. When MS O/S gets corrupted, it either has a missing boot manager or ntlkernel file corrupted which prevents a new installation.

Since you said you're using a WD drive, I just pop the DLG CD in and instead of checking the drive for problems, write zeroes to it. It's one of the options on there. You don't have to do the full thing, just do a quick/short one, where it does the first and last million sectors. That's plenty enough to wipe out partitioning and MFT/boot stuff.

If that still doesn't do it, then I would move on to memtest86. You might just have some bad RAM causing problems. If you get the same addresses constantly, then you have bad RAM. If you get lots of random bad addresses, you have a power issue either for RAM, chipset, or CPU itself.

I have an old Socket A board that was like that. It went through so much 24/7 100% loaded use that I had to increase the voltages to everything a notch at a time in order for the health page to show that the correct voltages were being read. RAM was maxed at 2.9v to show 2.6 like it was supposed to. vcore was set to 1.7 to get it to read 1.65 like it was supposed to. Chipset was increased from 1.5 to 1.7 to sort out the random address errors. Runs great now.

Also on your health page in BIOS, check and see that 3.3, 5, and 12v are all +/- 5% where they should be. I had a PSU two years ago on my old 2p Opteron setup that was only doing 3.1, 4.75, and 11.6v. Replaced it with another old and used one and everything was spot on where it should be.

Power issues cause lots of weird problems, so check the reported voltages first. That will probably save you a lot of headache.

With my experiences so far, no, it'll only continue the problem. It's best to just totally wipe out all references to NTFS partitions & XP won't do that.

Floyd and Sirus your both right , I had to put my xp disc in run the boot loader just to delete all the partions when I redid the system the other day .
I made the mistake of connecting the old disc and the blank disc tried loading 7-64 and nada I then disconnected the old drive ran xp quit it after deleteing the partion on the BLANK disc and then I could load win 7
However Sirus win 98se doesn't always read large drives theses days there to big and it doesn't always work I've tried so I use my xp Johnny as it boots from dvd and has the boot loader not all xp version had a boot loader remember the first time you had to load it with FLOPPY DISC 6 of them

Floyd did say it was a 200gig drive & so far, I've had no issues up to 750gig. Haven't had it happen on main workstation since installing a 1tb drive.

Ok , Maybe some good news for a change...
I used my oem XP cd from this old intel PC i got and installed XP on the old WD drive , Just couldn't use the code to validate, NOW... Maybe I can get the win 7 cd to install on the wd drive . If that works then maybe I can get a clean install of win 7 pro 64 bit and MAYBE fix these Blasted problems !

(EDIT) Nope , Got a bsod while expanding windows files.

Some PC's that I've upgraded from XP to Win7 I've had to disable some onboard controllers 1st before I could get Win7 to load.

Try disabling things like floppy controller, USB controllers (early USB 3.0 seems to be a big factor here), wi-fi controllers, firewire, etc.

After the install these can be turned back on and Win7 will load them up.
