Why is my transfer/upload/download rate so damn slow. Only 1kb. I just used preferences/options at home to change things. If that is it. I also updated online preferences. |

Have you tried this? Its by Richard Haselgrove. 1) Open a command prompt: Click on the Start button Click 'All Programs' Scroll down (if needed) to the 'Accessories' group, and click it. 'Command Prompt' should be visible... On the Windows 7 machine, right-click on Command Prompt and select 'Run as administrator' - click 'Yes' for user account control. On the XP machine, just click the Command Prompt as normal. You'll get what's often described as a black box on screen. 2) Run the command: This is the text you need. Don't even attempt to type it: highlight it all here with your mouse, right click it, and choose 'Copy'. REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters" /v "Tcp1323Opts" /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f Go back to the black box. Click on the miniature black box in the extreme top-left corner (the one with C:\... just visible in tiny print) A menu should appear: go down to 'Edit' and select 'Paste'. Press 'Enter' or the return key. You should see "The operation completed successfully". That's all you need. Close the command prompt window (the black box) with the corner 'X', or by typing 'exit'. Restart you computer whenever it's convenient. You should see fewer downloads backing off and waiting to retry - though this isn't a total protection against all problems, and won't make any difference to the download speed while the transfers are actually running. Before doing Mark's suggestion make sure are not using a proxy that has almost died. With the current up/down load rates native from the server very few should need proxies.... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

We don't know what your internet connection is and what else you may be doing with that internet connection. For all we know you or someone in the house is downloading or uploading Gigabytes of torrents at this time and you didn't tell the torrent program to leave bandwidth free. |

Uhhh...I did not suggest a thing. LOL. Except request that his post be moved from the cafe to here so he could get some help. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Why is my transfer/upload/download rate so damn slow. Only 1kb. I just used preferences/options at home to change things. If that is it. I also updated online preferences. Looking at your machines stats page "Average upload rate 38.54 KB/sec Average download rate 38.39 KB/sec" While not blindingly fast it's not what I'd call a problem. Is it just one download that's given problems and timed out (to resume later) or is some issue that's just developed? More info will help track down what your problem is. Ian |

Thanks to all. For future refrence. I date back, way back, to days before dos 3. I am also recently interested in Linux. For those of you that don't know, Linux uses a lot of and some even prefer dos as you have much more control. I am on Time Warner cable so it's not that. I also live alone, so nobody else is using bandwidth. I strong ly believe the first sugestion and will try it soon. Right now I am captureing a movie so don't want to tax my cpu further. Again thank you all for such quick help. |

I am on Time Warner cable so it's not that. I also live alone, so nobody else is using bandwidth. If you are using cable, you are sharing the bandwidth with everyone else that is on that node. With ADSL your connection & badnwidth is all your own, with cable it's shared with anyone else on that run. Grant Darwin NT |

I am on Time Warner cable so it's not that. I also live alone, so nobody else is using bandwidth. That explains why you might get less than the advertised speed, but not why you would get less than dial-up speed. Of course there could also be something wrong with your cable connection? You can check your connection by going to http://speedtest.net/. That will eliminate it being issues with your router or cabling etc. Ian |

Don't just unplug the power supply from the wall, unplug the power cord going into the router. The capacitors in a power supply can last a surprisingly long time. I am sorry guys. I got to busy with video editing and forgot this problem. Anyhow, I did try Mark's sugestion with the command prompt and it failed saying "acess denied." Could be I need special privilegs like administrator, which I don't think I a logged in as. I have never gotten to a command prompt as such. In general, I would like to know how to do it just so I could try this command again. REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters" /v "Tcp1323Opts" /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f It might help me with problems that pop up once in a while. |

Jim In Windows 7 even if you are an administrator you must right click the command prompt icon in Start and select "Run as Administrator" to know that is happening the prompt in the window will show C:\Windows\System32> of course C: may be another partition if thats where Windows resides. If it shows C:\Users\"YourUsername" it won't work |

I see my name was invoked for that "REG ADD ..." command line. Remember that was a workround for the congested link from the old server closet - it improved reliability (eliminating dropouts), but it was never expected or intended to improve raw speed. No harm in adding it just in case, though. |

Jim In Windows 7 even if you are an administrator you must right click the command prompt icon in Start and select "Run as Administrator" to know that That's all very well, but when I right click anywhere in the box all I get is a context window with no opertunity to "runj as administrator." Try again. The only place I remember seeing that option is in properties of xxx program. what a blind man I am. After several tries over several days, I finaly got it. I was clicking in the dos box. Not on the icon in the menu. If I sucssed with the rest of the suggestion I will post the results here. |

Well after running the command, the results were "the operation completed succesfuly." I will post the results as soon as a transfer comes up. I get impatient but I will just have to wait. |

Well after running the command, the results were "the operation completed succesfuly." I will post the results as soon as a transfer comes up. I get impatient but I will just have to wait. I Purposely held back on network activity to build several things to upload. I had four items today and they were all gone in less time than one would have before the above mentioned command. So, yes it is a great deal faster. On the order of maybe 10 times faster. Thanks for the help. |
