I am afraid that what happened in Boston is going to be hard to prevent in the future unless the American public becomes willing to forfeit most of the personal freedoms we have enjoyed for 237 years. I just hope the crazies never get hold of anything more devastating than what has already been used.

Glenn, what seems to be the case (seems it is all rather speculative) is that the older brother became radicalized over time (heaven knows the Russians provided a great deal of impetus for Chechen radicalization), and that radicalization moved toward Islamic radicalization for the older brother, and he carried his younger brother along with him.

In the US there is at least some potential for Islamic radicalization as there is a fair sized Islamic population and you only need a handful. Of course there is an even larger potential these days for reactionary right wing radicalization and there are way too many groups organized and organizing in that turf.

That is not a realistic answer to it all, and I suspect that you know that. We don't yet know the reason behind the Boston bombings, but I suspect that this is probably about right.

According to media accounts, Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, were Muslims who recently gravitated to a radical strain of Islam, going so far as to post Anti-American, jihadist videos on social-media sites. Both are thought to have as-yet-unprobed ties to a radical Muslim cleric hellbent on the destruction of the American way of life.

And, alas, would take us into the same gutter those we despise come from.
