Message 1358395 - Posted: 19 Apr 2013, 6:30:18 UTC - in response to Message 1358376.

I can get to http://www.kwsn.net but http://lunatics.kwsn.net still fails.

T.A.

The 1st one I can't get to, the 2nd I can get to.

Both of them are failing for me.

I've emailed the admin at kwsnforum, it's three years to the day that I last had to do it.

Edit: I wasn't able to get to Lunatics earlier, now i am, don't know if my email helped, no reply yet.

My ISP is 'Deutsche Telekom AG'.

http://www.kwsn.net & http://lunatics.kwsn.net -> show me a site of my ISP with 'dns error'.

http://jgopt.org is shown.

Cleaned out the DNS cache and I'm still able to get to both sites. I'm located in the Midwest of the United States, if that makes a difference. Try changing your DNS preferred servers to 8.8.8.8 and secondary to 8.8.4.4. That's what I'm using which are controlled by Google.

As the DNS change propagates though the system it will become inaccessible in more areas. In windows you can do a nslookup to see if your current server still contains the entry or not. I don't know the commands off the top of my head for *nix machines.

The 2014 expiration date was throwing me off for a bit. Looking up the info on tucows. It is their policy to set set the expiration date out 1 year when it expires and then give 40 days to renew it. After 40 days they nuke it.

I again can't reach lunatics, looks as if Toby hasn't got my email yet, and Lunatics reappearing was a fluke.

Anybody here to call it from europa ( German / France ) ?

jgopt.org (including /download.html) is accessible for me from the UK, on the same machines which still can't access KWSN / Lunatics except by using the host file fix.

My host give me unlimited storage & bandwidth. So if the lunatics want a backup site I can setup like http://lunatics.hal6000.com or something of that nature. If desired PM me and I can setup some users for ftp.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are two separate issues here. One is the actual IP address of a machine -- that is immutable and set by its connectivity via the ISP/organisation it belongs to. As long as you know that IP address you can connect to the machine.

The second issue is advertising the IP address of a given machine to the outside world under a particular name -- which is done by DNS (domain name server). A given explicit name can be mapped to the IP address as long as the mapping is known to the DNS system.

In this case it seems that the registration for the kwsn domain has lapsed, so the DNS resolution is gradually diasappearing as TTL (time-to-live) periods expire in the various DNS servers.

However, the physical IP still exists so as long as you know that (e.g. by putting it in your /etc/hosts file) you can still access the server.

Yep same here in UK. I can reach the website ok but to be greeted by a "parked domain" message so wonder why they have not just renewed the domain - not that expensive.
